Thumbs up Control your grow room from an iPhone"

I'm working to develop a computerized grow room automation system similar to the Growtronix, Grow Room and Greenhouse Environment Computer Automation controller product. This sort of system allows you to completely control the environment in a much more advanced way then with old school timers and controllers. Besides the huge benefit of sending text message alerts (temperature too high, intruder detected) to your cellphone. It also will allow remote access from a computer or cellphone such as an iPhone or Droid.

My vision is to have the software open source and for the hardware to be sold in kit form. I'm curious if anyone has any thoughts on this and/or any suggestions on features, hardware etc."

Don't mean to squash your spirit

As I was listening to the radio today the on air people were discussing a recent Fed investigation where a suspect's Google searches had been subpoenaed and used as evidence to develop a case against a suspect. Thanks to the Patriot Act Federal investigators can now vouch for each other for any sort of snooping that they want to undertake. Their snooping does not have to be justified to a judge and best of all, even if they found nothing and you filed a Freedom of Information Act request...they don't have to tell you shit. Now they can even refuse to tell an innocent person that they have been the target of an investigation.

This is not a partisan issue. Both the Republicans and the Democrats have whole heartedly supported this bullshit and like all government actions, once they put it in play it never goes away. Homeland Security and the mega billion dollar infrastructure that was created to support it are here to stay as long as the status quo is allowed to continue ruling us. Their interests are best served by being able to keep tabs on all of us, what we do and where every penny of our near worthless paper scrip gets spent.

Next stop, cash will be a thing of the past, and the lemmings will all stand idly by and watch it happen, all in the name of protecting us from the terrorists. This has already begun. Try withdrawing or depositing more than $10,000 and the IRS gets a flag. What most folks don't realize is that most banks now do their own voluntary reporting and logging of transactions totaling as little as $5,000 in some cases. Credit Unions aren't any different. Weed markets may have to convert to precious metals exchange sooner rather than later. Of course our governments can throw a road block on that lickety split as well. Again, it's not peculiar to either major party in America, the last time the government confiscated everybody's gold it was the Democrats. Next time it could just as well be the Republicans. They dance to whatever tune the owners of the Federal Reserve play (the assholes that control our currency, which by the way is not owned by us, it's owned by the "Too Big to Fail" fuckers that we just bailed out along with their international bank brethren). The States aren't alone in this either, just look at the history of the Central banks in Europe and the power behind the formation of the EU. This is especially true in the case of the Bank of England. Take a quick read of England's stock market and banking chicanery during the Crimean War.

Didn't mean to get so political but maybe if we didn't have over 700 military installations scattered about the world occupying and influencing sovereign countries, (all in the name of the corporate interests that own our government) we wouldn't have people so pissed off that they want to fly fucking jumbo jets into buildings. The Old World colonial empire builders have just been replaced by an American proxy of hegemony.

Technology can be a huge help to us in covering our asses, you just have to be careful that while you're trying to cover your ass that you don't pull the blanket off of another important part of your anatomy. If the government can pick through Google's records whenever they please, what would make Appleware or wireless network providers any more secure? Answer: Absolutely Nothing.

I'm embarrassed to admit that I originally started typing a response before I had even familiarized myself with the system that you were referring to. My bad for the autoimmune response to words like "cell phone" "text message" and "control" being used in speaking about a grow. I am a true paranoid, although not a full blown delusional schizophrenic...at least not yet.

The Growtronix system looks great, and I especially like the bit about interfacing with security and surveillance systems. Being able to cut trips to the grow would be a tremendous benefit. Not the least of which would be the idea of being able to see what I might need to bring along before I got there rather than after. That plus being able to keep 24/7 eyes on everything definitely works to help loosen the tight sphincter moments like "did I remember to turn this or that on or off?", "did I leave the door unlocked?", etc.

What I didn't care for initially was the price, but I guess I'd still want it to be cheaper no matter what the price. For an absolute control freak this looks like Nirvana. The graphing capabilities also look pretty amazing once you consider how hit or miss trying to relate all of the different variables involved in effectively managing a grow can be.

I'm not a software geek so I have no idea what this would entail, but some kind of secure wireless communication capabilities (is that an oxymoron?). I know that text messages and cell phone communications can be anything but secure so some means of custom configuring the message text and a way to allow the remote access using throw away pre-paid cell phones. Some sort of communications encryption that requires sender and receiver to possess mated programming. Of course there is the whole LEO and law element to deal with there.

Bill Text - 105th Congress (1997-1998) - THOMAS (Library of Congress)

We can go ahead and encrypt anything we want as long as you give them the key to fuck with it whenever they want...without telling anyone of course. We're allowed to protect ourselves from everything except our government. The Fabian turtle has finally struck. All hail the New World Order.

Something that would integrate camera feeds, pan and zoom controls under the same GUI? Lastly maybe the camera pan and zoom controls could be stretched to give me remote joy stick control of a turret mounted chain gun for pest intruder control and possibly a remote auto destruct button that would make the grow room computer do a Mission Impossible tape recorder self destruct kind of thing.

Better yet, how about a remote device that would cause the grow to combust in a catastrophic and instantaneous fashion. Yeah...Homeland Security would be all over that in a heartbeat. Actually I wouldn't be surprised if they weren't already, given the potential for complex wireless manipulations that this represents.

I'm a little confused though because the Growtronix site mentions apps for Iphone and Droid already. Are you associated with Growtronix or is this an open source alternative approach to what I would otherwise presume is their proprietary software.

I'd also be interested in hearing from anybody who has any experience with the Growtronix system.

Hello everyone,

Anyone use this setup? Is it worth the investment? I was looking in the growtronix and was wondering if anyone here had any experience with it?

Thanks,
