The first terrestrial life forms were probably fungi. When plants began making the transition to land, they were unable to uptake nutrients without roots. mycorrhizal fungi formed a symbiotic relationship in which they acted as the plants roots. Eventually, plants evolved roots, but the symbiotic relationship still exists, and mycorrhizal fungi continue to help plants uptake nutrients.
There are actually a handfull of high-end potting soil brands that contain mycorrhiza, is that what youre talking about?

on the note of high end soil mixes- and shrimp for that matter- you might wanna check out Chitosan, its some crazy shit. I used to make it with vinegar and crab meal, but if you got the $$ you can buy it straight.

Mychorrhizae are present pretty much everywhere I think- but using a supplement or an enriched soil early in a plant's life is a good thing as it will help them get established and working with the roots.
