What do you want to accomplish through meditation?

Theres four major variables when it comes to meditation/non physical exploration-

Belief
Intent
Expectation
Desire

Those could actually be stretched to accomidate the physical state as well but its a little more complex. Tell me your overall goal and il try to point you in the right direction.

I meditate daily, and my meditation is really simple. I simply sit and concentrate on breathing and relaxing, and that's it. Sometimes, if my mind is really frantic, I'll count my breaths (1,2,3,4,repeat). I feel it works well. My concentration improves when I keep up on it, and I feel more relaxed, which is pleasurable in itself.

here's a good mantra for us westerners to repeat in our head while meditating.

breath in, "shut", breath out "up".

i find the traditional "Clear your mind" type meditation boring. why would you want to sit and ponder nothing? it might be beneficial to your stress level but then again so is smoking weed, which i would much rather do than sit there and clear my mind of all thought. Different strokes i guess.

Meditation in the early days probably meant the same thing to most people, whereas today it describes thousands and thousands of actions that one can take while not fully situated in the waking consciousness. One would get in a relaxed position, "tune out" from the physical state and end up in non physical reality. Nowadays, like every other facet of spirituality/religion, the original teachings have been lost under pile and pile of complete bullshit. the most "beneficial" meditation, if there is one, would have to be a meditation that incorporates a complete change of focus away from the physical state. that way you get used to non physical reality and when you choose to leave this physical life permenantly you will know the ground rules and how to work with them. much like you had to spend the first 7-10 years of your life learning the ground rules to physical reality. Take it from me, you want to get situated with the ground rules of non physical reality before you "die". If youve ever had a nightmare you can consider that a small taste of what awaits someone who doesnt have any experience in consciously exploring non physical life. When your alive physically you have a body that you can "escape" to if you get caught in a negative loop, (nightmare) but when you die you have no such escape plan. so your stuck in your nightmare for what may seem hundreds of years until you finally learn how to operate in that mode of consciousness. So learn now!

(on a related note- users of psychedelic drugs often run into these negative "loops" due to unfamiliarity with the state they are in. so if you want any examples of my above theory simply go to erowid and look at the "bad trip" reports. this is personally, my main problem with psychedelics and other mind-freeing drugs in general- nobody knows how to operate in these circumstances so everytime you take the drug you are risking a negative experience until the drug leaves your body. im hoping that in the future these drugs will be used in a thereputic setting with someone who knows the ins and outs of the drug/the state invoked by the drug)

So for my 2 cents, practice meditation and get as "deep" as you can. Hopefully you can set up some sort of system wherein every time you go to meditate you get "deeper" until finally you can make the change from waking consciousness to "dream"(for lack of a better word) consciousness consciously. It takes a long time, especially for those of us in the west who were raised to believe there is no such thing as meditation or non physical reality or any of that stuff. But you will definitly thank yourself later.

Keep in mind that im not saying one way of meditating is more "right" than the others, theres just more benefical methods than sitting there clearing your mind of all thought. It would even be more beneficial to clear your mind for maybe 20-30 minutes, then go about pondering your current physical situation and what you can do to change it. Or maybe create a mental picture of a sunset, with birds chirping and work on engaging all of your non physical senses. Or imagine your non physical body moving around while your physical body sits still. All fun stuff. you are only limited by your imagination when meditating
