Question Hinduism and Cannabis....

Ive been told my some friends of mine from the subcontinent that cannabis has a large part in Hindu theology, although its suppressed in Modern day practice. Anyone here have anymore information about this?

TIA

Shiva is said to use cannabis, but Shiva is also said to have drank an ocean of poison.

I don't know about those who may practice Hinduism and also use cannabis, but I do know that there is nothing within the Vedas which substantiates its use in such practice.

Haha I was looking into chillums and looked this up.

Quote:
A chillum is a pipe used by Indian Sadhu, Rastas of Jamaica, and many recreational drug users in the United States.

... The ganja or charas may be mixed with tobacco. Hindu Ceremony: The safi cloth is wetted, the stone inserted and then the mix is deposited in the chillum until it is full. Then the mouth piece of the chillum is cupped between two hands forming a closed prism so that the smoker may inhale the smoke without touching the chillum with his lips. To do so would no doubt provoke a violent reaction from all present for such a break of etiquette. A match is struck by a second party and before the smoker inhales various praises to Shiva will be chanted such as "Boom Shankar" or "Boom Bolenath" The smoker must puff violently to ignite the chillum adequately which he will then pass always to the person on his right, preferably supporting his right arm with his left (except for Kali chillums which are passed to the left and usually include opium and ganja in the mix). The required etiquette can become quite complex and the average Westerner has little or no chance of meeting the ritual standards of a sadhu. Rastafari Ceremony: A ritual chillum used in Rasta sessions and grounations is made of a cow's horn fitted with a large, concial, wooden bowl.
Quote:
In Hinduism, sadhu is a common term for an ascetic or practitioner of yoga (yogi) who has given up pursuit of the first three Hindu goals of life: kama (pleasure), artha (wealth and power) and even dharma (duty). The sadhu is solely dedicated to achieving moksha (liberation) through meditation and contemplation of God. Although the term Sadhu has its roots in Hinduism it is also used for followers of other religions, if they live a Sadhu life. The most famous Sadhu was probably the Buddha and there are Sadhus in Sikhism as well.
I want a chillum.

Shiva is the destroyer. Shiva brought marijuana to earth to destroy our ignorance (or so it has been explained to me from a Hindu hash eater) .

Ignorance is becoming entwined in materiality. How can a material substance be utilized to destroy materiality?

EDIT: Sounds like the has-eater is making excuses. Tsk tsk.

This is their pre-history. Maybe Shiva didn't take that into consideration that far back.

the same way thought does.

i dont understand the whole materiality thing. if you can use a book to gain knowledge and the knowledge you gained was utilized to destroy materiality isnt that just as bad as smoking a plant and using the knowledge gained from that to destroy materiality?

its clear to see, imo that this is just the eastern version of "sin."

it could be argued that ANYTHING is material, so the religion locks a person into a belief that they are NATURALLY wrong or ignorant or bad. i dont agree. materialism is the way we experience this reality, to judge someone as ignorant because they choose to focus on nice cars and money is just as ignorant as actually being that person who is buying all the nice cars.

meh.

I'm just pointing out how vedic knowledge can negate itself. Nothing is perfect. You shouldn't do or not do something based on what a group of huffed-up religious types tell you, you should do what you believe is right: whether any dogma is in accord with it or not.

I just recognized the merit of this sentance! Absolutely right.
