Atheist/Agnostic..why do we exist...

In 500 years from now, your very existance will not matter to any one person. Yes some people are remembered for what they contributed in thier life. For example, Columbus in 1492 came to the new world, but noone really cares about Columus, or idolizes him everyday. So Basically my point is that regardless of how much money you have or who you are, it won't matter when your dead. I like to believe that for this very reason, it's obvious that there is a god, he made it simple for us to believe in him, simple for us to be comfortable with the fact that life isn't meaningless. But as an atheist, you could argue that that thought process is weak minded and i'm just settling for comfort. Understandable...
I don't dis-agree with the everyday atheist, I totally understand why somone would feel there is not god, I just believe there is. I would just like to get a better understanding of why they believe in what they do. Isn't there an emptyness? You see your life, then you know there's an end, then nothing? That's kinda a haunting feeling is it not? In 500 years, you'll be known as a number, a statistic, and more than likely you won't be known. I choose to believe in a pay-off, but I could be wrong...I could be right and it could be sweet. That's my opinion and belief, what is yours? Go in depth if you could. There's no right or wrongs here, i'm just fascinated with other people thought processes on this subject, thanks...

Im agnostic.. but i do have my own concept of what GOD is.. maybe i shoul duse a different word because it seems to have too many meanings these days.. and that is probably why there are so many atheists out there.. well i imagine that is the case anyway. At first i didnt want to believe in what i knew as the Christian concept of God.. and to say that im atheist just because i dont believe in that one definition would be wrong. But then again.. its all semantics.. groupings.. categories.. whatever you want to call it. My point about God is it is the actual concept of everything.. no divisions at all.. just ONE. If i never knew or felt that connection or had such a realisation/awakening.. then maybe i too would class myself as Atheist.. which would might be acceptable because what i believe to be God now would exist. But then at the time how would i know that concept like i do now.. i wouldnt. So its all speculation in the end.. take what belief suits you best.. I guess thats Agnosticism for ya.

watched Dogma today and I think a quote from there is applicable.

(paraphrasing)

"so you believe now?"

"no, but I have a good idea."

We exist because we can.
Life isnt empty because you make the most of it.
What comes after will either come or it wont, though what it could be I have no idea and I dont really care.

Why is it necessary, for life to matter, to be remembered far into the future?

People who tell me, "Life doesn't matter because you're just going to die someday" place too much importance on permanence. It's as if, because something can't be made to never change, it is worthless. What's the meaning of life if you're just going to die anyway? What is it if you never died?

There is only this moment. The rest is something you think about in this moment. Permanence is just an idea. So is meaning.
