Heaven and Hell, A story

A big , tough samurai once went to see a little monk. In a voice accustomed to meeting with obediance, the samurai said, " Monk, teach me about heaven and hell."
The monk looked up at this mighty warrior and replied in a voice of utter contempt, "Teach you about heaven and hell? I couldn't teach you about anything. You're filthy! You stink! Your sword is rusty. You're a disgrace to the samurai class! Get out of my sight!"
The samurai was speechless with rage. His muscles bulged. His face got red. He swung his sword high above his head, preparing to slay the monk.
"That is hell," said the monk.
The samurai froze. Suddenly he was overwhelmed by the compassion of this tiny, defenseless man who had just risked his own death to give this teaching. As he slowly lowered the blade, he was filled with gratitude and wonder.
"That is heaven," spoke the monk slowly and softly.

Quote:
A rabbi was talking with God about Heaven and Hell.
"Come," said God. "Walk with me, and I will show you Hell."
And together they walked into a room of cold, rough stone. In the center of the room, atop a low fire, sat a huge pot of quietly simmering stew. The stew smelled delicious, and made the rabbi's mouth water. A group of people sat in a circle around the pot, and each of them held a curiously long-handled spoon. The spoons were long enough to reach the pot; but the handles were so ungainly that every time someone dipped the bowl of their spoon into the pot and tried to maneuver the bowl to their mouth, the stew would spill. The rabbi could hear the grumblings of their bellies. They were cold, hungry, and miserable.
"And now," God said, "I will show you Heaven."
Together they walked into another room, almost identical to the first. A second pot of stew simmered in the center; another ring of people sat around it; each person was outfitted with one of the frustratingly long spoons. But this time, the people sat with the spoons across their laps or laid on the stone beside them. They talked, quietly and cheerfully with one another. They were warm, well-fed, and happy.
"Lord, I don't understand," said the rabbi. "How was the first room Hell; and this, Heaven?"
God smiled. "It's simple," he said. "You see, they have learned to feed each other."

Yup I'm sure you did. It's a traditional story. No one owns it, which is why I couldn't quote the source.

Did you enjoy the story in the mag or here, or did you just want to let me know you read things besides YaHooka ?

It was a mixture of the fact that I wanted to be subscribed to the thread and how powerful a comparison the story is. For all beliefs, even the lack thereof, this story rings true. Also, anything with samurai I will read.

haha nice dude! Thanks for clarifying.

Either or it's practical, and I think only becomes a theist 'value' when there is a 'oh, god musta' thought of this one' belief is added to inherent worth of the metaphor.... which is all fine and well. Where ever inspiration strikes... just do well and don't harm with it... and that works for either side of the fence too.

Loved the 'learned to feed each other' parable...has been one of my favorites for years and continues to teach me why it works all the time.
