A story about Supreme Being
So there is alot of talk in here about God. And it seems alot of the Anger about God comes from a mis/understanding of the Christian Bible.
I feel that generalizations are made, with few sources drawn upon, and I wish to share another idea of what "God" means in other religions. If anyone has a story or metaphore to share please do. There are many good stories to philosophically approach this topic, both theist and atheist. So please enjoy and share. The three phases of life, Birth, Sustaining, and Death, are represented by the Hindu Trinity thus culminates into One underlining the fact that the three are in reality one and the same Ishwara, Supreme Being. An interesting legend illustrates this concept beautifully. Once, Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva were boasting about their great powers. All of a sudden, a young boy came forth, and asked Brahma as to what he creates. Brahma quickly replied with pride, “Everything”. When he asked Vishnu and Shiva as to what they sustain and destroy respectively, he got the same reply from both Gods – “Everything”. Showing Brahma a small straw, the young boy asked him if he could create a straw just like the one he was holding. However, even after a great deal of effort, Brahma was unable to do so. The child then turned upon Vishnu and asked him whether he could preserve the dissolving form of the straw, as the boy gazed at it, but Vishnu looked on helplessly. The child , pulling out a new straw, finally asked Shiva to destroy the small straw but despite Shiva’s best efforts, the straw still remained as it was. Then the boy turned again towards Brahma and asked him whether he was the child’s creator. Even after great thought Brahma could not remember having created this bright child. The child then suddenly vanished, and the three Gods then remembered that there always is the Supreme Being behind their amazing powers and beyond their consciousness. Love SageTree

Interesting topic.
For myself, the jury is still out on whether or not there is a creator...but if there is, I beleive "he" would be alot like gods that I have read about in my favorite fantasy novels. In one of the books, a man was commenting on how some of the gods were different from his gods (the oriental gods) and one of the gods commented something about "I guess he doesn';t understand the plurality of being". The best way to describe this would be to say that God, Allah, Jehovah and any other god you can think of, are all actually the same being. Now, if "god" is omnipotent and omnipresent, this is not an impossibility at all. It seems to make sense to me anyways, after all look at all the division there is just within a certain religion (sects), it's very possible that all religions are just seperate interpretations of a singular higher power. Hope that makes sense, I'm at work and not feeling particularly scholarly today, but I think I got the point across.

I hear you. I agree the One concept. In my mind the Union of God is singular in essence and infinate material, however these are only words for expression. It's interesting to know what people have to say and how they understand their world. I feel that good is the only right thing to do and kindness is my religion of that connectedness.
Here is a deff. I found that I like to apply to 'God'. non-issue: the state of something that has outlived its relevance. Know who or what created really doesn't solve the problem of how to live correctly Now. The practice of a god's laws perhaps more relevant, but who started it all? It doesn't help me connect or disconnect... Its like the Northern Tribes not having words for ice. It's everywhere and not at issue. It just is. Not to say its not important, because 'God' effects me everyday, just like ice and snow would be if it permeated every aspect of your life. A world without ice/god just wouldn't be. Why think about it not being? That said I have a belief that isn't honoured with words, however I act in the consciousness of practicing the goodness I feel and the responsibility I owe to myself to pass that on. Loving Freely.

The philosophy class I'm taking now made me think more in depth of the possibilities of a supreme being(s). I just did a paper on the Telelogical Argument (Argument from Design) that states that the universe must have had an original designer. I really suckered into it too, it makes sense.
But I think the idea of God has really gone too far. Christians, Jews, and Muslims take the subject of God and put it on a pedastil. Follow His word and thall shalt live eternally in heaven. But if God is perfect, wouldn't he accept people the way they are and take them anyway? And then there's the problem of evil.... sry no story here |

I've heard some interesting elucidations using dung in the Buddhist tradition.
This one is a koan from Ummon. Quote:
We must say that being so poor, Ummon cannot appreciate plain food, or he is so busy that he cannot even scribble properly. He is disposed to support his school with dry dung. Look at how devastated the Buddhist teaching has been! Lightning flashes, Sparks of striking flint. In a blink of your eyes, You have passed by (and missed it). ' Know the answer ?
