I've always thought it was because we were raised by people who seemed omnipotent at the time, people who would make bad things happen if you were "bad" and good things happen if you were "good". It seems only natural that people would extend that line of thinking into their adult lives, believing that if something bad happens, it must be in response to them doing something "bad", etc.

You've been looking at it wrong. The reason physics work is because they use blanketing terms and peoples lives follow a similar pattern. So go against the grain!
Ghosts also, it is believed that it is a sound that humans can detect but not hear. Tigers emit this sound and it makes people panic. Hence why you feel uneasy in these houses that produce the sound. (I'll cite my source later. Gotta dig up the article)
But as for aliens, there is no prof one way or another to me.

that's completely bullshit.

they've got some good facts here and there but that article is 100% opinion.

besides, I'd wear a mass-murders sweater if it was clean, any day of the week.
