You're

The Dhammapada

Chapter 1, The Pairs

1. Mind precedes all mental states. Mind is their chief; they are all mind-wrought. If with an impure mind a person speaks or acts suffering follows him like the wheel that follows the foot of the ox.

2. Mind precedes all mental states. Mind is their chief; they are all mind-wrought. If with a pure mind a person speaks or acts happiness follows him like his never-departing shadow

Mind did not create consciousness.

Who is that response to? Or is that just an statement you wanted to make?

Responding to the concept that mind is chief. I say it's not much more than a grand computer. Everyone seems to get stuck on the Mental Plane...that's where the heavens of the lower worlds reside and most think the journey is done there.

I agree that we are chief of the mind, or atleast that mind isn't chief...Not sure if you were saying the first thing I said or not.

The Rev
it makes sense, being i always felt i lost part of my 'personality' (which by the way means 'mask') when i gave up marijuana. i think our mind is actually what chains us to the reasonable world, hence mad men have 'lost their minds'. just my two cents.

The only way I can understand it is, let's say you had half your head blown off in Iraq. Certifiable brain dead. I bet you could still have a consciousness, like what we experience most every night in a dream. Incapable of thought, yet "seeing" images. That which "sees" the images is soul (for lack of a better word).

Its simply not a yes/no subject.

The brain is calculator and the mind is the result. Since the result effects the equation, the basic answer is another question.

Have you ever read about lucid dreaming or have had an experience with it? I would disagree that we can't think in our dreams because there are certainly times where I know what is happening and can manuever with in the dreamscape.

It comes to me like seeing the thoughts float in my perifrial vision when I am meditating, there is an awareness of them, and I choose whether or not to become involved in them, or watch from a distance.

I like to refer to 'the one who knows' rather than soul in this case, since soul is laden with after life and gods. That I call it that is to say there is an essence that knows or sees, as you said, the phenomena exeriencing phenomena, that we attach our identities to with ego, if we so choose or know that we can.

Which I guess is the thing we are talking about now.

Does mind go blank after death? Intellectuals deny life after death...I refer to the Moody,Kubler-Ross experiments as the intellectual basis for life after death.

I'd imagine the electrical impulses that govern things would leave our brain blank as a physical organ.

I like to believe the mind works in layers. There are so many different personalities in our mind and depending on the situation we must pick and choose the appropriete one. EX you don't pull out "Party mind" when your at a funeral. Nor do you pull out "funeral mind" while your having a night on the town with a beautiful girl.

I think the mind does a lot of subconscious work highly linked to the "astral body", but at the same time I believe we are governed by infinity. I'm just not so sure if I'm a passenger, or the driver.

Is it what I think that influences my behavior,
or is it what influences my behavior(chemicals) that makes up what I think?
i agree with u on this one, i also think we have layers.
interesting therad
