Thats pretty fucked.

But why do they have to try and convince me to do something I won't? Why not talk about ways to find humanely raised chickens instead of shoving veaganism down my throat.

And though I know its no good to treat creatures like that, there wouldn't be that many chickens to kill/de-beak/etc in the first place if we didnt breed them for it.

And yea, the chicken/eggs would likely taste better/be more nutritious if they were raised more naturally.

Yeah, there's nothing like a dumpster filled with male chicks to put you off eating eggs.

And, no, you can't stop it by not eating meat or eggs or whatever, but you can choose not to be a part of it.

Unfortunately for some folks, local and organic foods are just plain unaffordable. Do what you can to be the change you want to see in the world, maybe.

Not SO hard to do. Learning to care for plants is a step closer to being able to keep a few chickens around for local humane meat.

American's ideas of meat portions are f**ked up. A deck of cards size peice of meat is all we need. It is our insane thirst for meat that is making this industry have to churn out so much product it is impossible to do it humanely. Not that I think Americans (in general) will ever allow themselvs to be told to slow down. But realizing that stripmining animal flesh is just as bad as stripmining ore is a good place to start.

The one good thing that will come out of the possible collapse of our economy and peak oil's bombshell is that it will be impossible to continue mass consumption thay way it is now. Just like supernovas and extinctions, in Natures beauty, destruction opens the door for amazing creation and innovation.

Word man. We (my gf and I) eat meat 1-2X a week, and the portion is actually minimal compared to the grain/starch/veggie portions on the rest of the plate. For example, most people eat damn near half a chicken during ONE meal! We do one leg of chicken per the dish, the rest being grains and veggies. This goes beyond humane animal treatment and PETA, this is pure health. We don't need that much cooked flesh in our bodies. We, as Americans, have just been conditioned to think so because it's such a high paying industry for those supplying it to us.

It doesn't have to be giving up meat entirely, just being mindful about how much one is consuming and finding responsible ways to maintain that.

Not to be too much of a dick, BUT, grains, rice, all domesticated crops are genetically modified. Either by selective breeding to isolate desired genetics for crop yield, or the newer more direct method of physically injecting/altering food crops' genes. We have been eating modified food for thousands of years, that is agriculture.

I would argue that done relatively slowly and across a broad scope, modern genetics have the potential to help corn survive a hotter climate, or to allow rice to boost its yield. I would also argue though, that these crops should be "designed" to be sterile, so that the native and local genetics do not get contaminated by experimental plants. Like what has been happening already unfortunately.

lol give me a little credit man. although i do hardly remember all the stuff from my science classes in hs.

i mean i don't want to eat some "super crop" designed by the government. i'm just wary of this shit... fuckin science.

indeed how unfortunate

haha alrighty man. I could not resist. Lets both agree that we need to treat GMO plants like nuclear waste and keep it from contaminating the natural environment. I don't want Tomacco sneaking into my garden either.
