yea, I'd say that is largely where it comes from. Although it really shakes you to the core of your guts. I can do it, but not sustain it like these guys.

One question, dealing with the Last Supper. It was a Pesach Seder. So, it winds up being transformed from what it was in the first Pesach, into what the Church celebrates.

How about we put it in context. It is best to group it with the following 4 verses, to get an accurate word picture. Peter refers here to specific activities and vices prevalent in that day in Asia Minor - where excessive drinking, along with unspeakable practices took place in connection with the worship of various
deities - there can be no doubt of the direct application of this passage to our own day and the condition from which many of us have come into the Kingdom.

Forasmuch then as Christ hath suffered for us in the flesh, arm yourselves likewise with the same mind: for he that hath suffered in the flesh hath ceased from sin; That he no longer should live the rest of his time in the flesh to the lusts of men, but to the will of God. (1 Peter 4:1-2, KJV)

Good question, I think because the translation is a bit gray. "he that hath suffered" is a single word in the Greek: pascho, meaning to experience a sensation or impression (usually painful). I think this part of the verse would be more clear as:

"experiencing flesh, restrain sin"

...referring not to Jesus, but instructing the rest of us. How does he suggest we do that? Via his previous statement: "arm (equip) yourselves likewise with the same mind", that is, the mind of Christ. So equipped, we will then be able to experience flesh (this existence) while restraining sin as described in the verses that follow (what Lurker pointed out).

This "equipping" is the very purpose of Christ, meaning "anointed", that is, the anointing itself. "Anointing" is chrisma in Greek, from chrio (both meaning a smearing/rubbing with oil), akin to chraomai, meaning to furnish what is needed.

What is needed, and called for in this passage, is the mind of Christ; oneness with God; illumination/enlightenment - that's the "equipment" with which to "arm (equip) yourselves" so that while "experiencing flesh" we can "restrain sin".

It looks like Lurker is gone, but I thought I'd respond briefly to this.

Pesach is Passover in English. When the blood of the lamb marked the door of a household, the judgement of YHVH (Yahweh) "passed over" (skipped) that household (Exodus 12). Where the blood did not mark a household, the judgement of YHVH was executed. Passover (Pesach) is the feast celebrating this passing over of judgement.

What the church celebrates today is judgement passing over those marked by the blood of "The Lamb", that is, Christ.

I don't know why Lurker asked me to elaborate, but I hope this is helpful. The real question is how does it apply to people today?
