Kerouac is a good answer, so is Martin Luther King Jr.

I don't know a whole lot about Malcom X but I like the quote " Be peaceful, be courteous, obey the law, respect everyone; but if someone puts his hand on you, send him to the cemetery"

Malcolm x's solution for everything was basically that black people should use violence to get their point across. he probably did as much to hurt the civil rights movement as he did to help it.

I've always liked Teddy Roosevelt. I saw a bio on him on the History channel and he was a pretty neat guy. I can relate with him because his ideal day off was hard work in the bush.

EDIT:

On one side it could be argued that every time a person defies that law, they are providing more justification for that law. On the other hand, the extreme racial prejudice was not going to be stopped via the legal system.

Malcolm X had much better business sense than Garvey ever did. But I'm down with Rodney too.

That's early, Nation of Islam, Malcolm X. After he made Hajj, he evolved. I think Malcolm did a lot to help the Civil Rights movement-he told white folks exactly what time it was. Check out his later work after he left the Nation, then come back and let's talk.

There's a wonderful photo of Malcolm's and Martin's only meeting where they are smiling their faces off and gripping each other's hands so tight it's not funny. It's my favorite.

BTW- Marcus Garvey, although I find him problematic.

I agree here, that there must be a time and place for our leaders to have life changing experiences in their lives as well.

Voltaire makes me laugh and think. He's on my list too.

Reform only happens if it suits those in power and at their pace, when they feel like it.

Otherwise it takes violence. Compare the Iraq war protests to the Vietnam war protests. Which one has lasted longer?

Well, the nam war seems to have lasted a long time, but we'll see what happens. I bet US troops will be stationed in Iraq and Afghanistan forever.
