Is Consciousness Drug Induced?
Is consciousness alien to the human body? I just got really stoned and had sort of a revelation.
I realized my whole life I've been trying to understand, human culture, human science and language. Isn't that just kind of a curious thought? That which I am a part of I have no understanding. Why is it that the things we so innately understand the things we cannot bury during moments of self-reflection are of little relevance to modern society? Why is it that these innate understandings are shared amongst all other beings in the animal kingdom. The innate understandings I am referring to are: Reproduce, There is something higher, Purposeful life, Love, Eat, Sleep, and Drink. Of course most of these must exist to sustain life. But why out of all other animals are we so full of such curious desire? Why does it feel like such a sudden change of thought going from when you feel most animalistic(drugs, starvation, fight or flight reactions, sex, etc). Is it possible that consciousness is alien to the body? It seems to all dwell out of curiousity. The only things I can think about that would make a creature this curious would be psychedelics. I've watched my cat enjoy my catnip plant from time to time, and she immediately acquires the mannerisms I would imagine a primitive person would. My cat dances around the plant after ingestion. Jumping rolling, catching imaginary bugs. Worshipping the thing that gives it curiosity. Perhaps this same kitten tradition is one of ours. Looking into shamans, medicine men, and healers of all kind, this is not a far fetched idea. Perhaps through evolution, hallucination is what gave us to more access of our minds? Maybe though the alieness of consciousness has nothing to do with hallucinogenic substances. Though I think it greatly does. An increased ability to wonder, and be mystified at the very blandest of life when you are trapped living through the senses. Sorry I am really high and just kept writing.

the trick is in realizing consciousness was around before a physical universe was, and caused the physical into being
something had to cause this whole 'existence' thing to kick off, something conscious and choosing not necessarily something omnipotent but maybe something omnipresent?

i just realized i assumed you meant 'chemically' induced and not induced by drugs that we take that affect our perception
my post might not make a whole lot of sense if you are talking about the latter the old debate among philosophers is whether or not consciousness is the result of chemicals in our brains or if consciousness is something that is separate from our body i tend to think consciousness was around before the beginning, and being energy it has always been there and always will be in various forms

You know what I think you might be right. I honestly never thought of consciousness being so heavily connected to existence. But with my beliefs it must be, because our experiences are so unique, and they would have to be if the universe was infinite(kind of confusing but if you follow it down it makes sense).
That's pretty rad-tacular. I like that idea a whole lot.

i think we come into being in an elevated conciousness or more concious, and as we age and are conditioned by our environment we "forget" the way we used to think as small children. I always feel like i have the childs perspective when im tripping, its like everything is new again. its hard to even wrap my mind around these ideas without imediately encountering many many many more tangential ideas and questions
grr

if the questions stopped what fun would that be? i agree with what your saying though, i dont know if elevated consciousness would be the word i use but i definitly see what you are getting at. we're metaphorical blank slates belief-wise when we're born so we're expressing what we truly are underneath all our programming and rules and beliefs and all that stuff. if one was to believe in reincarnation there would have to be some kind of consciousness we possess that extends beyond the physical realm or universe. something bigger than our egos. maybe kids are more connected with whatever that is?

maybe somewhere deep down inside all of us theres a survival instinct that still remembers that we are all dependent on every other living thing on the planet. theres a balance in the system(planet earth) that we have destroyed with our consumerism, and species loss is a big sign that its only going to come back to us in the end.
all life evolved amongst all other life, i believe its fitting to say that extinction will eventually reach the human race if we dont try and reverse some of that damage. i just had bio class

consciousness and compassion go hand in hand imo. consciousness is the ability to imagine/anticipate states beyond the present, and i consider sy/empathy a symptom of this.
like waves, i believe consciousness itself to be an innate, primal attribute of all things in existence. human consciousness, though, is the result of various unifying mechanisms (the laws of nature) evolving primitive structural units which permit the emergence of more complex structures and units, always yielding a higher level of unity. i believe our destiny is the melding of individual consciousnesses into a unified consciousness unit in the same way our individual cell units unify to create ourselves. it's like a marriage of consciousness with consciousness that gives birth to new revelations of our reality's potential. many channels talk about the blending of civilizations approaching the oneness of all-that-is. with the dots connecting as they have locally, it only makes sense that this unification template continues issuing outward to envelope the cosmos in the ineffable mystery of existence; wonders begetting wonders upon the fractal structure of even its most trivial components. carl sagan really said it best: "we are a way for the cosmos to know itself"

Consciousness is like the sky it's always there, but sometimes there are more clouds obscuring it, so we have to take the clouds for what they are, and transcend them to a view of the sky again. The knowing is there, the act of looking for it is often overlooked. And I DO believe psychedelics pull back the 'cloud cover' for a while and show us the pure blue sky with a blazing sun.....
My editorial: The control/practice of how to touch/visualize this clarity without the drugs is a responsibility to yourself and others, I personally feel. When you get the message hang up and call back later for a refresher. Living in a psychedelic stupor isn't healthy or fair to yourself or others either, in most cases. Once you see the seer, or know the knower, I don't perceive how you can't not want to share that peace with others. In short, I think Consciousness is already something in yourself, like treasure buried that we walk over for a thousand years. edit: Captured brilliantly midst my typing. Thanks for being on the wave brotha.

as far as psychadelics go, I may dose too much but I'm never out of it on a day to day basis. I think I may have hit on most of the universal realizations possible from tripping but atm I'm trying for something a little more paranormal. I fully believe that the thought that humans can go to extra-solar planets in little metal cans is flawed, and believe that psychadelics may be the key to interstellar communication.

Sounds very similar to what Terrence McKenna says in Food of The Gods about our ancestors eating mushrooms in Africa, you should check it out it's pretty interesting
just read your post Kitch, also very novel idea

you know kitch when i first started getting into psychedelics i noticed something cool. look at the structures of psilocybin and psilocin
see where the molecules differ? i thought those look an awful lot like a transmitter and a receiver. . . got me into some good stoned pondering back in the day. i think you might really enjoy reading through this if you haven't already. actually any of you will probably enjoy it: Ong's Hat: Gateway to the Dimensions!

I was worried my stoned ramblings would lead to no discussion. This makes me happy
.Yes waves I believe in the multiverse. It's simple in understanding why really. If the universe is infinite, then all of the pieces of infinity then must exist(Can you have an apple pie with no apples?). Which would mean that everything MUST exist, in all times/forms/ideas. So just as I am here today. I was here yesterday, tomorrow, the next day, as the same person, as different people, as all things. Finite or infinite, because of infinity. Science tells you that it is some impossible ocurrance of impossible calculations for anything to exist. Infinity tells you, you have to exist , because all things must exist. So many good ideas here! I'll add a little to kitch's hypothesis then let you guys continue before I reach my tl; dr limit. Kitch perhaps psychedelics are a gateway to cosmic communication. I certainly get the feeling something alien and eerie is happening every-time I heroic dose on mushrooms. I see it as NO coincidence that these chemicals occur naturally. Perhaps this communication your referring too is heavily based on the psychedelic cleansing that occurs from hallucination. Maybe it wipes the mind to it's rawest state where it can harness pure infinite energy(soul or universal energy matrix). I have had telekinetic experiences from hallucinogens and high doses of cannabis(ingested), so I know your idea is not only feasible, it is a reality.
