The real 2012- a new beginning

Despite Hollywood hype, believers in Mayan cycle say 2012 is not the end of the world | Oregon Living - - Oregonlive.com

Maxson, who's spoken to a few groups interested in 2012, patiently explains the myriad details of the Mayan long calendar. He admires their astronomical knowledge and mathematical skill. He marvels that a culture that thrived between A.D. 300 and A.D. 900 saw itself in the midst of a time cycle that began in 3114 B.C., would end in A.D. 2012 and then -- as cycles do -- begin again.

"It's not the end of the world," Maxson says, "it's the end of a cycle."

He agrees with John Major Jenkins, a Colorado writer who's published 10 books about the Mayans. Jenkins argues that the significance of 2012 rests on a galactic alignment, in which the sun and Earth will line up with the center of the Milky Way. As the alignment approaches, Maxson expects life on Earth to be unsettled for a while.

"Personally, I believe in a shift," Maxson says, "that we'll become less materialistic and more spiritual. I believe in the balance of yin and yang and this is a balancing -- on a huge, huge scale."

Anyone else agree? I do.

First this:

Failed end of the world predictions from 30 to 1920 CE

and this....

Quote:
Prophet: Jan Matthys

Date of doom: April 5, 1534

Revised dates: None

Apocalypse how?: The Second Coming and the punishment of sinners

What went down: Amid widespread religious and class warfare in central Europe, insurgent, apocalyptic Anabaptists had taken control of the German city of Münster. Their leader, Jan Matthys, declared the city the “New Jerusalem,” expelling or forcibly baptizing nonbelievers, and decreed all property to be communally held. Matthys predicted that the Apocalypse would come on Easter Sunday, and God would judge the wicked. That day, he led a small group of armed men against the army besieging the city. Matthys and his band turned out not to be invincible, and were hacked to pieces. The next year, Münster fell, and the remaining Anabaptist leaders were tortured, executed and displayed in these cages, which still hang outside the Church of St. Lambert.

Name: The Great Disappointment

Prophet: William Miller

Date of doom: Between March 21, 1843, and March 21, 1844

Revised dates: April 18, 1844, and Oct. 22, 1844.

Apocalypse how?: The Returned Christ

What went down: This might be the most touching failed prophecy ever. Millerism was an acutely eschatological strain of Baptism that emerged in upstate New York during the Second Great Awakening (the same time and place that produced Mormonism). Its founder, William Miller, believed that, with a close reading of the Bible, he could pinpoint the Second Coming. By beginning his count at 457 B.C. and taking the biblical “days” to mean “years,” Miller settled on some time between March 21, 1843, and March 21, 1844. When the window closed, with no sign of the savior, he revised to April 18, 1844, then again to Oct. 22. But still no sign. Wrote follower Henry Emmons, “I waited all Tuesday, and dear Jesus did not come … I lay prostrate for 2 days without any pain — sick with disappointment.”

Since 1844, Millerism has evolved into Seventh-day Adventism, which tends to be more cautious about getting followers’ hopes up.

* Name: The Great Mennonite Trek

Prophet: Claas Epp

Date of doom: March 8, 1889

Revised date: Sometime in 1891

Apocalypse how?: Our Savior of Uzbekistan

What went down: Following Claas Epp, a Prussian-born Russian preacher, a group of 100 families of Russian Mennonites spent 1880 marching 2,000 miles across Eurasia to Uzbekistan. It was there, Epp had told his followers, that they would greet the returned Christ on March 8, 1889, as a “bride community.” No dice, of course, so, like Miller, he revised. 1891 would be the year.

Epp died in 1913, excommunicated, miserable and probably afflicted with schizophrenia. Little trace remains in Uzbekistan of the Mennonites.

* Name: Mrs. Keech’s Prophecy

Prophet: Marion Keech

Date of doom: Dec. 21, 1954

Revised dates: None

Apocalypse how?: A great flood, plus some aliens

What went down: This was a small UFO cult, centered around a Chicago woman named Marion Keech. It would be unremarkable, but for its service as the subject of a famous study. Keech claimed to channel Guardians from the planet Clarion, who predicted an apocalyptic flood, but promised to rescue cult members on the appointed day. A group of pioneering social psychologists, led by Leon Festinger, infiltrated the group in advance of the date. Their resulting book, “When Prophecy Fails,” showed the followers’ contortions to avoid facing overwhelming disproof. After several explanations, the cult finally settled on the idea that a new message from Clarion had arrived, with the information that the group’s own faith and goodwill had saved the world from destruction. Festinger et al., meanwhile, had laid a foundation for modern social psychology.

* Name: 88 Reasons Why the Rapture Is in 1988

Prophet: Edgar C. Whisenant

Date of doom: Rosh Hashana, 1988

Revised dates: Rosh Hashana 1989; Rosh Hashana 1990; Rosh Hashana 1991; Rosh Hashana 1992; Rosh Hashana 1993

Apocalypse how?: The Lord raptures his faithful, and the End Times begin

What went down: This book, by Edgar C. Whisenant, took a “Rapture Ready”-style indexing approach to the end times, and found time was up. It was immensely popular among evangelicals. At RaptureReady.com, Todd Strandberg writes, “I personally had friends who were measuring themselves for wings.”

* Name: X-Day

Prophet: Rev. Ivan Stang

Date of doom: July 5, 1998

Revised date: Every subsequent July 5

Apocalypse how?: A combination of aliens and clowns

What went down: What apocalypse you believe in depends on what subculture you call home. The New Agers have 2012, the evangelicals have the rapture. X-Day, which fell on July 5, 1998, was the hipster day of reckoning, in the wholly ironic nerd cult called the Church of the SubGenius. (Sample: “There are TWO species of ‘intelligent’ life on earth. There are the mere Humans, descendants of some decadent primate; and then there are the SubGenii, JHVH-1’s prime breeding stock and descendants of the proud Yeti.”)

* Name: Y2K

Prophet: The Internet

Date of doom: Jan. 1, 2000

Revised date: None

Apocalypse how?: Planes fall from the sky, power plants melt down, etc.

What went down: We were having such a good decade, surfing high on the dot-com wave, basking in a string of preposterous national cultural events. Something just had to go wrong. These computers — they were going to betray us, and at the very moment when the future would be now: Jan. 1, 2000.

* Name: Chevlai shel Mashiach

Prophet: Yeshua

Date of doom: May 21, 2011

Revised date: Dec. 21, 2011

Apocalypse how?: An especially Jewish Jesus returns to honor God’s covenant with the Chosen

What will go down: The Messianic Jews are Jewish fundamentalists who also happen to believe that Jesus — or in their preferred Hebrew, Yeshua — was the Messiah, and that when he comes back he will kick some Gentile butt.

* Name: 2012

Prophet: Daniel Pinchbeck; ancient Mayan astronomers; Roland Emmerich

Date of doom: Dec. 21, 2012

Revised date: Dec. 23, 2012

Apocalypse how?: We run out of days allotted to us by the ancient Mayan gods
And finally...

10 failed doomsday predictions - LiveScience- msnbc.com

2012 is a shift, but it's already happening and has been for a while. 2000-2015 is more accurate. We're in the midst of a sea change in how we relate to everything from our environment and communities to our planet and the universe itself. And people always think great change = great catastrophe. Quite the opposite, as all our "predictions" have proven. We're just building the human consciousness database and it's about to reach a whole new level of complexity (and then keep going).

That's what I've been saying for quite a while.
I don't think anything will happen but if it does, it's this.

Seriously, if I wanted to I could just throw the next gay guy I come across right up against a wall and give him an anal assault and he wouldn't complain one bit.

but the world IS ending! the old world of corruption, oppression, and lies. people have an intuitive sense of this, i feel, and depending on their belief systems it can manifest anything from nagging fear to unquenchable hope. i've run the gamut, and proven to myself that the world reflects a 1:1 representation of what you believe yourself to be seeing.

i remember wayyyy back, when i was very young like 5 or 6 and used to watch documentaries on discovery channel with my dad all the time, 2012 would be brought up on occasion. it used to seem so far away, but i felt lucky that i'd be around to see what all the fuss is about. well i'm not waiting anymore

I saw a preview for that movie on the big screen.

Why would anyone want to see this? It looks to be a crier for sure.

I don't think that is the message and what you bolded is much closer to what I picture.

Humans want connection at heart, and this movie/concept is just a way to express that tragic longing to find something to all get along about.

I think we are standing in a river asking for a glass of water personally on this matter.

Let's make 2013 calendars and start selling them NOW!? Who is with me?

there have been many threads on yahooka if i can remember rightly.

The personality of the planet is aligning with the celestial stars and rightly people would hope that a new hippyland era would be birthed. In hope we will all be illuminated and glowy enlightened to how to love in a more special way, open up to pure emotions beyond love.

I hope that the hippyland era was a taste of what is to come after 2012.

maybe at the center of hte milkyway galaxy is a star-being that is beyond light. That is what I believe and for this truth, beings connceted around the world with emotions for all of earth may learn from the center of the milky way we hope, and many eath like planets may teach earth. wow!

I have heard an "aura call" from a girl very far away from earth, twas I believd in elation from a sweet galaxy neighboring milky way galaxy, however the "aura call" may have come from somewhere in the milky way galaxy.
Such a reverbation gives me hope that the mayans were also recieving spiritual awakenings first and then decided to give later societies a map that used math an whatnot to point out the stars.

Thanks, Ego. that is what I like to mention when people bring up 2012, end of days predictions have been being made for a long, long time, and we're still here.

what really makes me kind of sigh is when people who recognize themselves as "Christians" insist that the world is going to end in 2012..if they would check the scripture themselves it clearly says that only God knows when the world will end, not even Jesus knows.

not saying you can't be a Christian and believe that the world will end in 2012but I am of the firm belief that no human soul knows when the world is going to end, if history has proven anything.

even if you look at it from a scientific point of view, odds are it will all happen abruptly and all of the sudden anyhow.

edit-the overall point, don't fear the inevitable. and certainly don't fear something that has been hyped up by the media more than anything in recent history.

That was awesome man, thanks a lot!

It really is true though... change IS going to come, whether or not it's the easy way or the hard way. Let's be honest (and rightly cynical) though, the odds are heavily stacked in the latter's favour.
