that mythical thing we call gravity

the better question though is why

edit: although you could also argue that our universe isn't being held together at all. semantics.

if that's so, why do stars in our galaxy not orbit its center at a speed relative to their distance from it? they all move in unison, but the outer stars should be moving faster according to our understanding of gravity

ya got me there.

although i would say that if the outer stars are keeping their position relative to the inner stars then yes they are travelling faster. 'm unsure what you mean by moving in unison though.

The further an orbiting object is from the mass it orbits, the lesser effect that mass's gravity has on it. Therefore, in order to remain in orbit, it must move more slowly than if it were closer, so that a weaker centrifugal force is created, as this force must be in balance with the weaker gravity to maintain an orbit.

Read the science .... Boys

It is Bat Guano.

Guano (from the Quechua 'wanu', via Spanish) is the excrement (feces and urine) of seabirds, bats, and seals. Guano manure is an effective fertilizer and gunpowder ingredient due to its high levels of phosphorus and nitrogen and also its lack of odor. Superphosphate made from guano is used for aerial topdressing. Soil that is deficient in organic matter can be made more productive by addition of this manure.

I think it's pretty obviously Duct Tape.

/end thread.

Did you know that back in the day ships used to go to places like South America or small tropical islands to "harvest" the bat Gauano to use for those purposes? Seems grossly cool to me.

bummer! forgive the typo guys i meant that the inner stars should be moving faster

according to our understanding, the strength of a gravitational field is inversely proportional to the square of the distance from its source. in our solar system, this causes the planets closest to the sun to orbit at speeds (edit- and therefor make revolutions) much faster than the outer planets. as such we should observe a similar phenomenon for the orbit of stars in our galaxy about its center, with the innermost stars orbiting much faster than the outermost. instead we see stars near the center moving relative to stars on the outer edge, meaning revolutions are completed in tandem. it's like placing some pennies on a record and letting it play. somehow, the outer stars are keeping up even with those stars closest to the galactic center.

I didn't know that. Hmmm... Cool.

I am still not convinced there's anything that holds the "universe" together. I think there's more to the "universe" than we can wrap out TINY LITTLE BRAINS around. There could be infinite dimensions... with no physical boundries.. The last time I tripped I felt like if I just thought of doing something would in fact happen in another dimension.. haha it sounds crazy but...here's my best explanation of why I feel this way..

Everyone makes conscious and subconscious decisions every day, but if not even ourselves can control those sub-conscious decisions, who does? I think there's something going on behind the information that our 5 senses understand. Life is too complex for even us humans to understand.

What makes me think this is that there's a clear difference between the physical world, and the living world(nature vs animals). We can some how share similar experiences with each other by being with each other and experience similar things, but we will never be able to experience the exact same thing as another person at that same time. So this is what makes me think there's got to be more than the 3 dimensions we can comprehend.

The obvious answer is love.

Other possible answers IMO include consciousness (manifesting existence, also a similar answer to love) and nothing holds everything together, because everything fills everywhere so its all suspended/packed in relative to everything else, there is no need to 'hold it together'.

But yea, love.

magnetism, electricity, and vibration

the natural forces that govern the laws of our universe and how it behaves should be pretty simple for humans to find out. hell science has been around for barely 2000 years and we're already close to answering this question. all we have to do is observe and analyze shit, its pretty easy.

what gets me is how all this shit got here in the first place. how stucture and novelty and complexity arise from chaos and nothingness. i think we might take a bit longer on that one. the forces that created our universe dont act according to any laws or structure, in fact its almost like its the job of the forces that created/create our universe to create laws and structure. thats some deep shit that interests the hell out of me.

when we DO finally get there i think whatever it is that created us and the universe is going to be way more interesting than the laws that bind it together and cause it to act in the way it does. not that these questions arent important, they are of UTmost importance to the furtherment and benefit of our species
