Earth: the Pale Blue Dot, 20 years later

This year's Valentine's Day will mark the 20th anniversary of the culmination of a debate among NASA scientists who were faced with the decision of whether or not to risk damaging Voyager 1's cameras by pointing them back towards our solar system (and our sun) in order to take what was seemingly an unimportant, obscure photo. They decided to take the risk, and this image was the result:

it's interesting to note that in the photo, the earth appears to be lit up by a beam of light. according to the story i heard on the radio on the way home from work today, this was actually an accident that resulted from some light reflecting off of Voyager's panels, but it is ironic as it plays into the delusion of man's "special" place in the universe which carl sagan speaks about so eloquently in the above video.
