there's a very good essay on the subject of liberty in David Dodd's Annotated Grateful Dead Lyrics. Unfortunately it's only in the print version, not online but if you're ever in a bookstore it's worth a read...

I find it interesting that so many of modern day morals, rights and values stem from the conceptualization in the dawn of the American Dream.
My own philosophy of liberty would be different than that flash animation, one that actually is enabled in the face of oppression and expands farthest when standing still.
