White Rastafari/White Buddhist?

These two religions appeal to me, not only because of marijuana, but because of ideals and their views. When I say views, I refer to those both religious and secular. I used to be forced to go to the Mormon church, then afterwards, the presbyterian church. Neither of these appealed to me, and led to my eventual status as a self proclaimed atheist. I know that Jah=God, but it isn't the deity that I have a problem with. Rather, its the doctrine of both of these Judeo-Christian religions.

So tell me, is there such a thing as a white Buddhist or Rastafari?

no. white people are not allowed to be buddhists or rastafarians. you should try out scientology though they love white people.

I don't like scientology they sound weird. Also, please don't come starting shit on my thread. I don't start shit on yours. I'm pretty sure Buddhists are tolerant to other races, but I have never met one so I never had a chance to ask.

To answer your question, Buddism and Rastafarism do not discrimate based on race. I have certainly seen white men and women with dreadlocked hair. Jamaica's anthem is "One Love". There are Asian, Black, white and all types of mixed-race Jamaicans, some of which practice Rastafari.

I heard a while back that Richard Gere is a Buddist.

I think the greater issue is if white people will feel comfortable being in the minority in a Buddist worship setting or in a Rasta worship setting.

Best wishes

I'm not from Texas, just live there. Also, I was pretty sure Buddhists were tolerant, but when doing some online research on Rastafais, it says theres a strong focus on "afro-centrism" which I took to mean that whites may not be all that welcome. Just because someone has dreads doesn't mean they're a rasta, someone mentioned that above.

according to this page , your good to go

Q: I have been reading a lot about the teachings of JAH, and the history and beliefs of Rastafari. I have a Question, you see I am 16 years old and I am white. I would like to know, are white people allowed to be Rastafarians? because if they are I would very much like to be one. I started learning about Rastafarians I guess because of Bob Marley, I consider him my hero! I would appreciate a reply as soon as possible. Thank you and peace, Tim.

A: Rasta is only concerned with your heart

and on this page is a white guy talking about being a white buddhist.

my only advice/comment would be to make sure you are in it for the right reasons, because you are interested in the philosophies and ways of living, not just cuz you like to get mad high and talk about crazy shit. or like this guy, because bob marley is your hero. but it sounds like the teachings and information is what your interested in from your posts so i say go for it, follow your excitement and sense of wonder with the world

Well, Buddhism appeals to me because of how the people who practice it always seem filled with such peacefulness. I don't know alot about it, as I said before, but all in all its a great step up from what I grew up with. As far as Rastafarianism goes, it's not about getting absolutely disfunctionally high. I do that without a religion. I like how they use marijuana as a spiritual tool. I like the divinity they associate with the herb. Maybe what I'm looking for is that "Zen" quality, that peaceful bearing, that both of these religions seem to have. Thats something I struggle to find, something weed hasn't been able to bring.

Alot of people said to me, here in the real world, that if I was to be a rasta, I would be like a fake ass rasta cause I'm not black. I dunno, maybe they're right, I have to look more into it.

Anyone see Darcus Howe's devil's advocate where he covers rastafarianism?
The part where the white rasta explains his perspective. Everyone in the whole studio facepalms.

I believe a major goal of rastafarianism is repatriation of Afro peoples with slave heritage to Africa. That doesn't really make sense in the context of your average white person.

Most "white rastas" have IMO listened to a few Bob Marley records and got a bit carried away. All the ones I have met have basically been poseurs trying to appropriate someone else's culture to bolster their own image.

I can see no reason why whites can't be buddhists.
But in practise a lot of westerners fail at buddhism because they can only perceive reality from an egocentric perspective- they are only concerned with their own spirituality.
The Dalai Lama curries favour (very cleverly IMO) with hollywood buddhists and the like ATM as it gives important publicity to the issues Tibet faces with China.
