The cat in the box...

A scientist was obsessed with cats, and he put a cat inside of a small box with poisen to kill the cat. The scientist did not know when the machine would release the poisen, he only knew the cat would die. The only way he knew the cat was dead was to open the box and look inside. Without opening the box and knowing for sure that the cat was dead, the cat is simultaneously alive and dead at the same time. Thoughts???

Confusing... no way to know when, but in every way certain that cat was dead. Kinda like, if you really think about it, theres an infinite amount of time between each second. No matter how many times you divided up a second, you could always find a smaller piece. You could approach zero, but never truly reach it. Poor seconds. They have it rough.

if a tree falls in the forest and no ones around to hear it, i can guarantee it still makes a sound

i mean look the cats gonna die and you arent going to know when the cats dead because you are consciously blinding yourself from the reality of the cat.

pretty simple to me but i guess we can squeeze some philosophical debate out of it.

Its worth noting that the. op has a totally misleading understanding of the situation. This was a thought experiment by schrodinger (ie he wasn't obssessed with cats and never actually did this experiment) to demonstrate the effect that measurements have on a quantum system.

i'm sorry but i really can't discuss this with you at all at this point. anyone who introduces schrodinger as obsessed with cats and claims the cat-in-a-box experiment was real.. i just don't know what you are trying to do or say. you learned a couple words about quantum mechanics and that is great. quantum mechanics is fucking awesome and it has really crazy philosophical implications that are insane to think about and discuss. the problem with the subject matter is that no matter which level you are discussing quantum nonsuch at, you are required to have a fairly strong background in mathematics and a good grasp on classical mechanics. at that point you can begin to understand why quantum mechanics is needed (and the awesome history surrounding its development), and how it affects experimental results (that is, that the cat is both dead and alive at the same time).
