Eckhart Tolle

Where should I start? I've seen a lot of his quotes floating around and I follow him on Facebook but I don't know where to begin.

Eckhart Tolle - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Quote:
Tolle had an unhappy childhood in Germany and Spain, and was depressed as an adult in England until he underwent what he calls an "inner transformation". He then spent several years as a vagrant, "in a state of deep bliss", before becoming a spiritual teacher. He eventually moved to North America where he began writing his first book, and he settled in Vancouver, Canada.
Tolle's books and teachings have received both praise and criticism from theologians and the mainstream media. He says he is not identified with any particular religion, but his work has been influenced by a wide range of spiritual teachings.

I've only read "The Power of Now" and IMO, he has a sense of what he is talking about, but tends to wander off into his imagination with some of his ideas. The reason I think this is that, when critically examined, his ideas are occasionally contradictory, and tend to be dualistic.

I think he's the broken watch being right because it just happens to be that time of day.

The more the dysfunction of the human mind plays itself out on the world stage, clearly visible to everyone in the daily television news reports, the greater the number of people who realise the urgent need for a radical change in human consciousness if humanity is not to destroy itself and the planet. This need, as well as the readiness in millions of people for the arising new consciousness, is the context within which the success of The Power of Now must be seen and understood. This does not mean, of course, that everyone responds favourably to the book. In many people, as well as in most of the political and economic structures and the greater part of the media, the old consciousness is still deeply entrenched.[40]

Eckhart Tolle - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

People call him new agey but thats the sanest shit i ever read.

Well brother it's nice of you to wait for me to ask, but I've never more than looked at his books on a shelf. I think the only band wagon books I've ever read were 'The DaVinci Code' like 5 years after the movie came out and 'Third Jesus'.

It might be very cool stuff, and might be something I read some day. But when all the kids in 7th grade were flocking to this or that music, I never went in for a listen. Years later, I was able to sit and listen to it and never had to sweat being called poseur by a poseur. The music was good and I thought, perhaps it's too bad I didn't listen to this back in the day, but I'm sure my perspectives and memories would have been different than they are now.

So I just went to read some quotes by him : http://http://www.woopidoo.com/busin...olle/index.htm

A lot of this looks like appropriated Buddhist/Sanatana Dharma terms brought to modern language.

Quote:
Most people treat the present moment as if it were an obstacle that they need to overcome. Since the present moment is Life itself, it is an insane way to live.
Quote:
All cravings are the mind seeking salvation or fulfillment in external things and in the future as a substitute for the joy of Being. As long as I am my mind, I am those cravings, those needs, wants, attachments, and aversions, and apart from them there is no "I" except as a mere possibility, an unfulfilled potential, a seed that has not yet sprouted.
Quote:
Internal and external are ultimately one. When you no longer perceive the world as hostile, there is no more fear, and when there is no more fear, you think, speak and act differently. Love and compassion arise, and they affect the world.
It might be a retelling that makes a lot of sense to people, but living in the 'now' or present moment, already has a language of that, that makes sense to me.

Thanks and I'm honoured you'd want to ask just me. __/\__

If you'd like to PM more about this let me know. Perhaps I'll listen to a speech or two by him and see what, if any, thing catches me differently.

But over all else, I'd like to encourage you to look for yourself

In kind
SageTree

just cus hes got a big jesus lookin beard doesnt make him the wisest person on the board, the power of now really changed my life, it sort of gives you a guide on how to live and approach things in life, alot of critics have dissed the book saying it's mumbo jumbo n a load of crap but you have to have your mind open when reading it, you have to feel the words rather than just see them as fact if ya dig?

Welp.... I've listened to several interviews and talks.

I think it's great there is a venue for people to have a language accessible to them which explains self, ego and the present moment awareness.

Like I said, I have found a language that addresses these topics for me, but perhaps if I see it floating around a used book store cheap I'll give it a read.

What makes you think to ask Bastard?

Sage: his main message is as follows....The human ego was developed to give us "higher thought" but has turned into whats blocking our evolution into aware beings. He believes the ego is a world wide mental disorder. Your ego creates a story about yourself and an image of yourself which you think is you, but there is a deeper you that must be discovered so we can evolve.

He was a depressed vagabond for years until his "enlightenment" at age 29 (same as buddha and jesus).

Anyways he takes ideas from buddhism, suffism, the bible, zen, and mysticism

I just like how he brings eastern philosophy of zen to the busy western mind. And I have realized that my ego is obsessed and repeatetive (spelling). My image of myself is based on my story ive made up for myself. It should be about something deeper than that.

whats wrong with helping oneself terry?

if theres anything this world needs right now its people to help themselves. guess what aint no one else gonna do it.

sounds like youve got one shut-ass third eye. needs some squeegeeing.

pisses me off that this kind of stuff is frowned upon by the mnstrm while they sit in their dark movie theatres watching their soul-less movies of people killing each other and shit blowing up. (not u terry...u listen to joanna newsom)

fuck.
