Buy a Quran Day
I'm going to buy a new Quran on 9/11, to replace one of the one's that gets burned. I want to react to an overt act of intolerance with an overt act of tolerance and acceptance.

The spur to burn Qu'rans is nothing but a boon to produce/publish more, since that Church is buying [instead of donations] and then burning them.
Your purchase will fuel more being made as well. Stupid rednecks.

Man - great idea Rev! I never thought of doing that in opposition! Now I just have to scrounge up enough money to do it, and FIND one in this podunk, white-bred, redneck hillbilly hometown of mine!
(Just a little levity folks, borrowed from South Park...but it is pretty white 'round these parts!)

I'm betting Amazon sells them any day someone wants to buy them
Will have to check how many they sell on 9/11 after that date.

the quran literally teaches for muslims to kill, conquer and convert all non muslims
there are chapters where mohammad chops off the head of non believers and enslaves them. it actually teaches that in situations where they are not strong enough to conquer they should pretend to be peaceful until they are strong enough to wage war again. but according the quran there is never really peace until all non muslms are conquered. im not saying that i hate all muslims, i wouldnt judge all muslim people because i think most people are just born into it and believe what they taught by their family. i just think religion in general is stupid and islam is the most primitive, violent and ignorant religion. in islamic nations they stone women regularly under their "laws". in the world of islam there is no separation between government and religion and the government is generally very bad but islamic people accept it. so take that for whats it worth, if you want to respect a religion how about hinduism or buddhism that actually teaches peace

Having never been exposed to the Qur'an yet, I can't tell you what it says. Of course, those who abhor religion in concept could also say much of the same of The Bible, especially in the Old Testament. And if I could decipher much of the book of Revelation there could be quite an argument made that The Bible is just as violent toward non-believers. I also don't know much about Hinduism or Buddhism, other than what I learned through reading some things George Harrison wrote
I DO know that love towards people is much better than hate!

Perhaps it's high time islam had a second coming and a rewrite of the qu'ran, throw down some big red words and ease up a bit.

Seriously, it's long, but really a worth while listen. There is actually a series of debates on faith in which Shabir Ally is involved in, check em out.

Islam/Judaism/Christianity teach peace, and if you read Hindu texts there's quite a bit of violence as well. Buddhists have their own warrior philosophy too. It's all about meaning, not the words.

All the major religions and spiritual traditions have the same two things in common:
1) They teach us that we are of divine origin, or at least connected to the divine in some special way 2) They teach us to live up to a higher standard in light of that fact. Now, the books may have other, less savory stuff about stoning people, genocidal slaughter, and God smiting everyone, but when you get down to the person by person level, only a tiny minority actually practice violence. For most religious people, it's just about being a good Christian/Muslim/Jew/Hindu what have you, and that goes back to those two things. Religion is 99% a benefit to our species. It's just that 1% we give all the credit to, especially those of us who universally condemn all religion. ![]() The Rev |

The classic is the translation by Abdullah Yusuf Ali. Also, The Meaning Of the Glorious Koran, done by Marmaduke Pickthall, a British Muslim, is good. An Interpretation Of The Qur'an translated by Majid Fakry is good, because the English is modern & has excellent explanatory footnotes. Ali & Pickthall are more in the traditional mode, but depending on the edition you get, have excellent explanatory footnotes also. Last but certainly not least, TheSublime Quran translated by Laleh Bakhtiar is outstanding because it's the first translation in modern English done by an American woman, who corrects some translation errors found in the others. You should be able to find them at your library, via interlibrary loan if that is neccessary.
