Just go with me on this one for a second...
Watch this, then refer to the bottom.
http://i.imgur.com/ekTX1.gif So basically the only reason we haven't and probably won't find life anywhere near us is because we are living in a very short time frame compared to the rest of the universe? What do you guys think about this animation? |

The end?....
![]() Sounds damn reasonable, I believe it. But I also believe that we will find other intelligent beings before our extinction

Think about a star 2 million light years away. If there were any intelligent species looking at Earth, all they would see is pre-historic jungles. No people, no buildings, nothin. So why even bother contacting us? We don't even exist yet.

Voyager and Voyager II are predicted to last a billion years in the void of space, if not longer.
Our electromagnetic TV/Radio waves are already reaching our nearest neighbors, and they're only getting stronger. Even if we don't make contact, evidence of our existence is already out there. and most likely, anyone able to contact us probably has some sense of warping spacetime. Also as the sun expands, given the slow pace of it all and the rapid, extremophile evolution, who's to say life can't keep pace? In other words, who knows?

All I'm saying is, that evidence that is "out there" has barely gotten anywhere, galactically speaking. None of our transmissions can travel faster than light speed, and all the stars within their current reach are pretty much lifeless. Einsteins theory of Relativity an all. I'm sure theres other life out there, the odds are in favor at least. However, we haven't even become a blip on the radar so to speak. Give us another thousand or so years, maybe our signals will have reached somewhere sentient by then.

I'm not necessarily talking about extraterrestrial life. I'm just trying to grasp where we are on the universe's timeline. Just trying to imagine everything that's lived before and will live after our time, not necessarily on earth. I bet star wars has actually happened at one point or another. One species against another fighting with technology. The universe is so big there could be a "universe war" going on right now and we wouldn't even know it.
But as someone else mentioned, anywhere other life could potentially be, the light just getting to them still shows prehistoric time... hahah so funny to think about. |

this is what kept me up at night as a child..
"mom, if god made the universe then who made god?" i believe it was a black abyss in the beginning us and it will be after.

"Human life will likely still exist" 1.1 billion yrs from now? That's a generous prediction, although the slide's theory on the sun is what I accept as probable.
I would give humans 50,000 years, 250-300K tops, insects for millions more and before 1 billion end of all life on Earth. A billion more years for people doesn't seem to be a well accepted theory, even among optimists... |

We are definitely doing a fine job of slowly killing ourselves for sure. However, I like to think the human race will finally learn from its past and become enlightened to a more stable existence. If we keep going like we are today, SoK isn't too far off base.

We are a good deal more intelligent that some primordial lizard. Recall, the mammals survived the disaster(s) that claimed the dinos.

Maybe not for you, but for the rest of the human race, thats how we became dominant. All other species, if a giant asteroid was gonna strike Earth they'd be SOL, but we would just fire up some rockets and jump ship. Hell, we would likely destroy the rock or veer it off course for that matter. Next time, think a little before ya type.

Nah but I also don't expect that people would just sit and wait to die. I would go to JSC, be with the rest of the mob as we push down the fences, take the Center over, and get the fuck outta here. C'mon, we would see a space disaster coming years away. thats pretty much the only catastophic event that would wipe the population. I live far enough from the coast to avoid water rising due to ice caps melting, if Nukes are the way we go I'm fucked, and if Yellowstone blows we will know waaay before it decides to go. Did I miss anything?
