Why is it..

that more often than not... people do not follow their dreams.. they don't do what they really want to do? What are your dreams.. dreams you can make a part of you waking reality.. and are you doing something to make it so..?

people dont follow their dreams because most peoples dreams/expectations of life are much higher than what real life can offer.

my goals in life are to just try and be happy, make enough money to support myself. build some cool stuff, have some more adventures before i die, get married, etc.

Usually it's because life happens. We back into the ordinary life one decision at a time, one compromise at a time, until eventually you're so up to your ass in mortgage payments, work deadlines, parent-teacher conferences, getting the car smogged, etc. that any idea of chasing that dream just seems too big to include on the list.

^^This.

Also, if everyone was chasing their dream, the world would fall apart. I would imagine there are very few people who dream of being garbage men, or sewer techs, or working at an electric plant, or any of the thousands of other "menial" tasks most of us take for granted but are needed to make our society run the way it does.

(I would say money is another big reason...if people didn't have to worry about making/having money then they would be free to pursue more personal interests)

^That's the future of robots and computers.. hell I think they have robotic garbage collectors already.

Interesting replies.. I agree!

I dream of lucid dreaming every day.. starting an ethnobotanical farm.. and so many many more things. Many of my dreams are small and have been created already.. which is pleasing.. but there is always another after that.. so I guess my dream is a collection of small dreams. heh

I reckon its fear of failure or insecurity in the unknown, many peeps dont take the jump they just stay in the realm of wishful thinking.
My dreams are fairly simple thats to just be free and be myself I have no desire to be anything more then that and when the time is right in my life I will have accomplished my goals one by one as I choose to.

When I was younger, I always wanted to be a pilot. My dad was a pilot, and I guess I just looked up to him. But one day, I got pressured into taking ecstasy and now I can't because I got fucked up chemicals in my spinal fluids. So I think it might be because people literally can't follow their dreams. But for now, my dreams in life is finding a beautiful girlfriend, and just relaxing, keeping my head out of drama and bullshit.
* BEST ADVICE * DONT DO CHEMICALS

Dude, there are no anti-piloting chemicals lodged in your spine. Who told you that shit? I did acid back in the 80's, and I still took flying lessons. And while I know that acid is water soluble, and therefore fully flushed from the body within 72 hours of ingestion, the rest of the propagandized world thinks it stays in your body forever causing flashbacks - and no one even asked before I got in the pilot's seat.

A lot of reasons why people don't follow their dreams and chose to be something else. There maybe some circumstances that happen in their lives that stop them from becoming what they dream of. People who wanted to become a doctor but they can't make it due to financial reasons. Or people who are force to do something else because they were manipulated by other people. Like someone who wants to be a doctor but their parents disagree and send them to a law school to become a lawyer instead. But no matter what the reason is, we have to follow our dreams because that's what we want. We have to fight for it. it is our life anyway.

The society we've set up for ourselves doesn't allow for most people to chase their dreams, at least not full time.
I think the need for manual labour and menial work to be completed is one aspect, but that is only important for the current system society works around to remain, the people who profit most from this system don't particularly want the whole world taking the rest of their lives off work so the system remains, and will probably remain for as long as it can in my opinion.

This system I think is purposely set to ensure that all people who want to own a home and raise a family (most people) have to spend their lives chasing a carrot via employment/financial commitment, with harsh penalties for slacking off, thus making it uber risky to devote your life to anything other than commitments.

Nasty business, but what can ya do?

I definately think an ethnobotanical farm is one of my ambitions, and quite frankly the way forward.
I think my over riding dream would just to be free to pursue my dreams, sounds obvious I suppose but it has endless possibility!

you've all been trained to do so since birth.

the goal...is the quest.

or...maybe we are living exactly how we are meant to be living. Learning and experiencing exactly what our souls are meant to be learning and experiencing.. a necessary step in our evolution. Humans are so hard on themselves...always seeing a reason to be frustrated or let down and those thoughts keep us down.

A life dream of becoming a pilot/doctor/lawyer/indian chief... rarely involves being knee deep in bureaucracy... i assume its a want to capture the feeling of freedom of soaring with the birds, healing people, settling disputes, moving a culture along....if its that dream.. you can capture that in alot of different ways.

If a person examines their life and hones in on the challenges of the drama of everyday life, they aren't really free... It doesn't matter whether they attained that ultimate dream of becoming whatever they want to become.. they haven't seen that the only thing they need to be is "be" and the rest flows.
