Happy Diwali.

I can't say I have any idea what it is about

Diwali commemorates the return of Lord Rama along with Sita and Lakshman from his fourteen-year-long exile and vanquishing the demon-king Ravana
but it looks like a good excuse to set fireworks off and eat food with friends and stuff..

In a more allegorical sense it's a good over coming bad and the Ramayana's telling is the one celebrated by Hindus/ Followers of the Sanatana Dharma. There are also Sikh and Jain takes on the festival and it's spiritual value.

I'm sure you have read the wiki page a bit, but here is something that leaped out at me that I felt of sufficient worth to quote.

Quote:
Diwali:In each legend, myth and story of Deepawali lies the significance of the victory of good over evil; and it is with each Deepawali and the lights that illuminate our homes and hearts, that this simple truth finds new reason and hope. From darkness unto light — the light that empowers us to commit ourselves to good deeds, that which brings us closer to divinity. During Diwali, lights illuminate every corner of India and the scent of incense sticks hangs in the air, mingled with the sounds of fire-crackers, joy, togetherness and hope. Diwali is celebrated around the globe. Outside India, it is more than a Hindu festival, it's a celebration of South-Asian identities.

While Deepavali is popularly known as the "festival of lights", the most significant spiritual meaning is "the awareness of the inner light". Central to Hindu philosophy is the assertion that there is something beyond the physical body and mind which is pure, infinite, and eternal, called the Atman. The celebration of Deepavali as the "victory of good over evil", refers to the light of higher knowledge dispelling all ignorance, the ignorance that masks one's true nature, not as the body, but as the unchanging, infinite, immanent and transcendent reality. With this awakening comes compassion and the awareness of the oneness of all things (higher knowledge). This brings Ananda (joy or peace). Just as we celebrate the birth of our physical being, Deepavali is the celebration of this Inner Light.

While the story behind Deepavali and the manner of celebration varies from region to region (festive fireworks, worship, lights, sharing of sweets), the essence is the same – to rejoice in the Inner Light (Atman) or the underlying Reality of all things (Brahman)
So on the 'closer to divinity' word choice, I have a thought on the a commonly used reference to 'The Supreme Being', The Divine, Brahman.

My thought was on the world play of supreme being and thought perhaps that 'being' could be a verb, and that this would make it "The Supreme Way of Being".

So with this in mind one might endeavor to be closer to their own Supreme Way whatever 'godliness or divinity' that is chosen to be put on it and that IS something we can all benefit by humanistically.

Happy Dawali!!!!!

Two years ago I fasted the week before and during the festival and on the small insight I had in a conversation during that time I went from a 'half empty' way of the world to 'half full.... if not over flowing . So this celebration is a personal marker as well as one I gather with others to rejoice in.

The streets are shut down a couple of blocks from here right now, so The Wife and I might mosey up that way here in a bit and walk in the light as the sky grows dark.

In loving kindness,
SageTree

In a more practical sense, think of it like Christmas/Hannukah/New Years' rolled into one 5 day holiday.

I tried to make it spiritually practical on humanistic terms...... but of course there is the humanistic value in partying your ass off

For me going to the festival times in Vancouver were a real treat the 3 years I lived there, but it wasn't until going to a quiet northern town that I learned much about it from a friend who was far away from her family and community, which is why she asked my Wife and I to celebrate the inwardly side of it with her. Which suited her needs and my desire to experience another Way of exploration.

For me the limited experience I have had with the observance was best remembered for it spiritual overtones.... that and, of course me being me, was my bias in the answer.

So thanks for the reminder to pull my head out of the clouds, party down and remember that people do a lot of drinking and feasting during the holidays you mentioned being rolled into one and probably all the others too

In kind
