There is a picture of my Grandfather beside some plants he got from North Carolina back in the 50s. Sadly he isn't with us in that way anymore and I can't ask if they are from seed or whether he transplanted them or what.

They look really healthy and they grew. I don't have any stories of him doing this on the regular of if he even cured and smoked them? They had a garden and did some farming, so I know he was decent with plants but really don't know how much care they take?

Sorry Pharm Girl, I'm sure there is lots of info some where.....

Surely there must be be a "Hooka.com" out there for tobacco enthusiasts? You know, with growers and all.....

Good luck, that would be a very special grow.

Here are two hits from google when I typed 'tobacco cultivation'.

I think part of the trick is waking up 1000 year old seeds, they'll need to be soften up a little or have a sand paper tech worked up on em, where you scratch the surface a little bit.

Cultivation of tobacco

Quote:
Tobacco is usually cultivated annually. It is germinated in cold frames or hotbeds and then transplanted to the field until it matures. Tobacco is grown in warm climates with rich, well-drained soil

That's the stuff I'm looking for

Quote:
General note if planting more than one tobacco variety

Tobacco is considered a self pollinating plant meaning it has the ability to fertilize it's own flowers without the aid of insects. But different tobacco varieties planted close to one another can and will become crossed by insects such as moths, etc. that commonly visit the plants flowers. Tobacco can also become cross pollinated by wind although at a much lesser degree than by insects. To keep tobacco varieties pure, isolation of one mile is needed between different varieties to insure continued variety purity is maintained or other preventive cross pollination methods should be used if isolation distance is a problem.

Check out the pic.....are they gonna grow that tall??

1000 years??? Seems like quite a long time. I'm not sure they would even resemble what is grown today. Well, maybe resemble but......

All I know is that in the US, the tobacco of today is grown mostly in NC and KY, and even those 2 states grow different types. Here in Ky., they plant seed beds in the mid-late winter (Feb-March) and cover them until spring (May). Then they are transplanted into the fields. Tobacco has a long growing season.

I don't know for sure, but I like Sage's idea about scratching them up a bit. I would look it up first tho, cause I would hate to do it wrong with something as special as that.

Hi PG

I don't know much, but I used to live where they grow it. The farmer I lived close to used to plant the seed under plastic, they put a canister of some type under there that is supposed to kill all the weeds. So I guess the seeds sprouted under the plastic, like the ziplock method used by folks.
Then I have had the pleasure (not) of cropping the tobacco. This is when the plants were about 7 or 8 feet tall, they have a stalk that comes out of the middle with the flowers, and you cut it out just before it blooms. When you cut the stalk out, it has really sticky sap that comes out... I still have my cropping knife somewheres around here, and it is gummed up with dried, black, tar like sap. They also have HUGE tobacco worms get on them, which I think are close to, or the same as the tomato worm.
I think they have suckers, like tomatoes do that you need to cut off also.
I like to had a heat stroke when I was doing it, the plants were so tall no breeze blew through them, it was in the 90's, and humid. Not a fond memory

Here is a link for ya: How to Grow Tobacco. Growing Tobacco at Home

And a few pics

Well, the long awaited and a little late picture I promised.

The plants aren't as tall as I recalled, BUT there are a TON more than I thought he'd grown. Like A LOT!!!

And we'll see how the uploader works but may I'll get some extras in too.

Yup, that's me in the back on the wagon too.

Foxy was the horses name and she was a Tennessee Walker.

Those are pictures of pictures, I have the 'hard copies' and some of them are Pap's baby pics even.... so from the late 30s.

It's funny to think about how different life is from then... not in all ways.... maybe it's just my imagination...?
