Karen Armstrong: What is religion?
I like this lady as a writer and was pleasantly surprised at how she addressed the topic from an informed stand point. With all tongue in cheekness of the name of the topic
![]() She doesn't talk about 'good or bad theology' rather this ,to me, seems like an intermingling of historical basis of word choices and examining what those word choices mean to her with current translation knowledge and w/ of course some philosophy attached. Perhaps suggesting how things would look different or could at least shed some light on the present situation of our humanness. I'm sticking this in HT because I don't feel I intend this as a theological post, but rather a non-sectarian view of religion and it's impact on the human condition. A look at how words change meaning/philosophy. While she is a person of faith and freely uses the word God singularly, but not suggestively to other possible meanings, I never get the sense she is doing anything beyond using religious allegories to suggest that there is humanistic worth to religious practice. What she 'believes' seems is that there is a deep and rich way to live ones life.... perhaps that is the only emphasis underlying the talk, but she doesn't play favourites and comes with only helpful intentions. In other talks and books I've read by her 'compassion' is what underlies all Spiritual practice. She is applying current knowledge to ancient teachings with Higher Thoughts in mind and enjoy her mingling of faith, as she lays out AND reason. Also.... you gotta love the chaos around the middle of this talk. In kind, SageTree What is Religion
