Well here it is.... a chance to lay your hands on your very own Quran.

I'm unable to tell which translation it is, however. Email for details.

Blessings be upon you

You can get an e-version of all the major holy books at Project Gutenberg, as well.

Truly, that is the quickest and most sustainable way... given all the smart/pads out there, I'm sure this is a REALLY good and easy way to get around ordering a text.

I however LOVE sitting on the cushion on my floor, reading a bound text. Something about holding it for me is part of the process

Like reading the news online.... sometimes nothing beats a paper and coffee

Danke for mentioning this though Rev. We also have a 'Sacred Texts Library' sticky in the Spiritual Smoke forum.

Cheers

your brain processes text on a screen differently than in a book, so that is a consideration as well

i can't seem to find the study since i don't remember where i read it. to summarize and completely simplify and probably rape details, you retain more information from physical texts than you do when you read off a screen.

I think the way I am when I'm looking at a book verse the screen is a lot different as well.
More comfortable, and not nipping off to look at other online texts, wikipedia or other references.

I'm pretty amazed they followed through.

I know the mosques around here give out this really deluxe version from saudi arabia.

What link is that from? Very cool though man... It's nice they included the other stuff as well.

I just got a copy from Qur'an Speaks.com

Shabir Ally and the Islamic Information and Dawah Centre International, is the sponsor.

I would recommend youtubing his name, there are some AWESOME interfaith debates on there... LONG as can be... but REALLY good stuff.

T.B. Irving's translation is the one that came to me.

I got mine in under two weeks. I have the N.J. Dawood and Yusef Ali translations already and wished to see if this one could replace my Dawood copy.

Follow the link above... the DUDE.. you WILL have a Qur'an.

What I like about this one is it tells you the theme of the surah/chapter, when it was 'revealed' and if it's Meccan or Medianian.

Also it helps you find the topic/theme in the scripture itself, so you can see where the ritual, philosophy and laws come from, which is pretty handy since, imo, the Abrahamic faiths are less accessible in this manner as opposed to Buddhist Texts for instance.

I'm always really sure to look at the translation because some Saudi based/funded translations have less than inclusive renderings and puts them into refutable territory.

I have Yusef Ali's with LOTS and LOTS of foot notes about history and translations where a word take a paragraph to explain, and I also have the Penguin Classics N.J. Dawood's Koran, which is simple and paraphrased but is a little lacking IMO...

The one I just got is very accessible as I mentioned to Geeno. So far from what I've read this is a good recommendation for a first time reader.

Yesterday I received my free Quran from Allah's Quran - Order a Free Quran!.

As it turns out, it was a smaller paper backed version of the larger, hard backed Quran I already possess.
Albeit the new one doesn't have the Arabic or the extensive foots notes, which is actually nice because the 'pocket' Quran I have right now is too small to read on transit.
So I'll pass that one on perhaps and will instead enjoy this new, larger print Quran that is still small enough to come along for the ride.

My main intention in posting this was to say that it was the Abdullah Yusuf Ali's translation, which is agree upon a good resource for translation and was not sure which translation I'd be getting from these links.

I already have one and would feel guilty getting another for free.

However I may consider it if the free version is actually readable and interesting, as mine seems to has left the readable and interesting parts out and it's like reading a disjointed version of Psalms.

Who translated the one you have?
Having something to compare a second translation to sometimes helps bring clarity to Books that were originally in English, so maybe a second would be okay really?

I'm interested to know which one you have because part of the reason in getting some different translations is to look at their accessibility as devotional and/or scholarly material.

The post above your last one talks about the most recent one I received and it's one of the most popular translations in English from what I've gathered in seeing it in personal collection and have seen in English speaking Mosques. The link is to the sight to get that one. You can read more about it above if you'd like.

The Irving translation, also mentioned in this post, has been good so far and is more devotional and shows where the practices and advice arises in the Suras. That Quran is from the 'Quran Speaks.com' link.

Xil, received one from the other link of the three post in the OP.(thefreequran) and am not sure which trans. that one is.

The one I WILL be getting rid of is my NJ Dawood translation from Penguin publishers. IMO, it's ridiculously stripped down. Reliable yes, but when I cross compare it 'sums up' a paragraph in a couple sentences. It's a good reading for an intro into the Quran. So I will pass it along to the Abrahamic study group I sit with sometimes and perhaps someone will take it with them.

Thanks for asking Terry. Hope to hear more about which trans. you have and any questions.

Idk what translation I have and the book is packed away. Tbh I think the translation may make a slight difference in readability, but is pretty inconsequential overall. There's a reason many Muslims learn Arabic to read the Koran, I think a lot gets lost in translation and to get the full experience you have to learn the language it was written in as it is probably very poetic and beautiful.

Unfortunately I do not speak Arabic, so I wasn't too impressed by the Koran. But I'll be the first to admit it would have probably moved and inspired me if I heard and understood it in it's true Arabic form.
