Its a way for your consciousness to work on things while you are asleep. You get to play out scenarios in your dreams that relate to various scenarios in waking life, although it may not seem like it because dreams are abstract. You are basically putting on a giant three dimensional play in your head, casting the roles, playing the part, etc.

Its a way for you to process perceptions, meaning, understanding, behavior, etc.

I think deja vu happens when you actually create a very close scenario to the one you cooked up in your head in a dream.

there is probably a definitive answer but it is outside of the realm of our human ability at the moment. lots of smart people have done lots of good research though so we arent completely in the dark.

to go off that, i dont mean to direct this all at you clive:

to me all you have to do is look at the perceptions that result from dreams and you can pretty easily discern what their psychological function is. we perceive reality kinda like normal life but its malleable and the rules of logic dont apply. that to me means that our brains are processing data but not in the normal state of consciousness. we process so much data in each moment that its outside of our ability to actually comprehend how much data we process in each moment with all of our senses and such. besides the senses you have your own consciousness which is judging and discerning and analyzing and identifying moment to moment.

so what kind of data is being processed? it appears to me that dreams are kind of like a training ground for your psychology. its like the debug mode on your consciousness. you can input different numbers and experience different scenarios and process different kinds of logic and meaning than you would in real life. this has an extremely positive evolutionary benefit in that we are able to think abstractly and process all this stuff consciously. we are able to process meaning and understanding and consciously choose things. its the same way in dreams, we are processing meaning and understanding and choosing what to experience consciously, albeit to various levels. hence the lucid dream and the normal dream. in all dreams you are choosing, but only in lucid dreams are those choices conscious.

so basically my belief is its like dreams are a virtual reality chamber in your mind. just like you can imagine anything with your powers of imagination in waking life, the same applies to your mind when you are asleep. the potential this holds in terms of CONSCIOUS use is the same that applies to conscious use of anything in the real waking life- when you are able to consciously choose what you are experiencing you are able to form your own psyche and identity based on your choices and behavior. thats kinda what i think the dreamland is all about- processing data in terms of how it relates to yourself and your own identity and outlook on the world. of course its not the real world so all the rules and logic of it dont apply, hence all the whacky shit that goes on in them. you could be processing data about your love life, and suddenly find yourself fucking the hottest chick in the world.

there doesnt even have to be any troubling issues or resolution going on, just your mind processing data. choosing, identifying, analyzing, etc.

just like when you lay there in bed and you get all those random thoughts coming out of nowhere and you suddenly realize youve been planning some random excursion for the next day for the last 5 minutes in your head

so im sick again, and i had a temp of 102.2 last night so i was expecting to have weird dreams. i also have a sore throat so i didnt smoke at all yesterday, first time in months lol. so with the compound fx of both i had some of the most lucid and intense dreams i ever had. i woke up wondering if it was real several times and then wondered why my mind was showing me such things.

i have to preface this a little. ive been looking forward to this weekend because my parents are going away til monday. i was planning on hitting up the avalon in la to see cold blank, rolling and coming home to my house to come down and chill with my friends. now that im sick that probably wont happen. anyway.

so my first dream i was in bed (in the dream) and i felt something on top of me, shaking me and stuff trying to wake me up. it was two of my close friends. at this point im wondering why the fuck these people are in my house while im sleeping. so i get up and go downstairs and my house is almost full of people and some of my close friends are outside. my mom was making spaghetti sauce and putting, not meatballs, but dumplings in it? i dont think shes ever done that. i kinda pulled her aside and said wtf mom why did you let all these people in. i look down and there are two bongs on the floor and kinda just gestures to the bongs and says something i cant remember.

i go outside in the back and tell everyone to leave, because im sick and i need to sleep to get better. so lucid lol. my friends didnt comply so i started to get really mad and kinda telling them to "get the fuck out" etc. still no compliance so i start pushing and shoving (not that id do this to my friends irl). the frustration was probably the most intense ive felt in my life. i give up and go back up to my room and find 2 more people. at which point i get REALLY pissed. GET THE FUCK OUT OF MY ROOM etc. my one friend is looking out the window down to my backyard. hes like im trying to hook up dude. i picked up my guitar and started threatening these people and still no compliance. so i swing and nail my friend in the shoulder with my guit. he gets mad and hes like ok dude we'll get out. i put my guitar back on its holder and i look and most of the strings are now broken. strings are expensive so i got kinda sad about that as i dont wanna spend more money because i just got new ones recently. i get back in my bed and wake up in real life SWEAT DRENCHED and really confused. im not sure if i actually woke up to real life or if i was still dreaming. i was kinda in between concious and unconcious.

i wake up again and the people are now upstairs just hanging out outside my room. i walk out and one arm choke slam one of my friends who happens to be 6'5" and played college football. not possible lol. at that point im like fuck this. it gets kinda hard to remember at this point, but i think i drove somewhere and got my car stuck or something stupid like that, another frustration.

next lucid moment im standing in the playing field at my old elementary school and im looking to the north and i can see the space shuttle on the launch platform lol. the shuttle takes off and is going up when it starts to curve down and eventually crashes. this was beyond real, i really thought the space shuttle had crashed lol. i could hear like a commentators voice talking about all this random shit, like newscasters do when something bad happens. i woke up not long after that, again drenched in sweat.

i looked down toward the foot of my bed and my guitar is intact, and i breathed a sigh of relief.

fever dreams always do that to me, and im on strong antiobiotics so they kinda fuck with my head sometimes too.

so now i think its the antibiotics im on that are causing the dreams. very lucid

i had a dream last night where i was in some strange house with glass walls and water flowing through these weird channels in each room. i was with a girl, but i cant quite remember who she was. at some point in the dream i was being chased by "authority" figures. it was kinda like the matrix where the agents just kept coming from wherever and i couldnt really do anything about it. i remember running really far through streets with traffic and such. i came to a feild where prisoners were working and they were cheering me on as i sprinted. i kept running through the feild and i came to the edge of it and realized it was basically a cliff, or a really steep slope down that i couldnt handle. i looked out over the scenery and below was a giant river with the reflection of the setting sun glaring in my eyes. i kind of knew i was going to be caught at that point so i ran to my right along the edge of the "cliff" and thats when the dream ended.

it was really weird how detailed the dreamscape was in this one. ive never even seen a river like that in real life let alone how detailed it was with the sunset and everything. it was actually really beautiful. i wonder if it was a real place?

ive been havin some pretty crazy vivid dreams too recently.. some crazy shit. you cant help but think what the fuck they're all about. I dreamt I fell out with my girlfriend i cant remember what it was over but just that she hurt me alot. I woke up and an hour later an we had broken up over something I found out. not the first time its happened either.
