If the internet can think?

As a whole, it is vastly more intelligent than any Human and it has potentially billions of nodes. Could the internet become sentient. Or is it already there?

I have a theory that some of the more damaging viruses and worms that we have to deal with is just the internet playing with us. Like Skynet at the beginning of T3.

Yes i believe it is HIGHLY possible for sentience to develop on the net. Like you said, the amount of information on there is astounding.

By the time they develop a computer that can process the same amount of info as the human brain (gonna happen in our life-times) , i feel like it would be a Certainty that sentience would develop in that machine itself, let alone the Net.

Well, the singularity [where computing power will surpass human brain power] is predicted to happen in 2019, so I don't think it's a stretch that it could start thinking on its own.

How can one declare with certainty that one of the greatest mysteries (consciousness) will arise from mechanical processes one probably doesn't understand the workings of in the first place?
