Christmas
I honestly feel like this is the year that I should stop fucking with this holiday. I do not enjoy it, it makes me feel bad. I feel guilty. I'm not Christian and have very strong Marxist views, so why do I even fuck with it? The tough part is that I have a 3 year old neice that obviously loves this Christmas shit, but I seriously come out of every Christmas feeling like garbage. I don't know what to do.

Why do you feel guilty about Christmas? Make your niece a gift or something so you don't have to feel guilty about being a capitalist or whatever.

I look @ xmas as a good reason to hang out with friends and family. Those are really all that matters in life. Just look @ it like Xil said, its a fantastic point. Kids don't get its not about presents. If your low on fund make a gift like Ex said. Maybe you could start a new tradition within your family. Here in my area we have several huge parks that they fill with xmas lights. Maybe you could start doing that with her and the rest of your family. My family up north does this every year and we always have memories of the visit. I'm rather impressed that you hate xmas but are willing to deal with it to make your little niece happy. PROPS Black!!
I also would like to know why you feel guilty for not enjoying the holiday.

Well it isn't cocaine, and it certainly isn't liquor...
So there is no surprise that you don't want to fuck with it...

Christmas is a time of magic for small children, and a duty for the rest of us. If we can use this time to support the magic end, then it's a good thing. I just get jaded at the whole "gotta get something for this person and that person cuz they're gonna get something for me" anxiety. It would be better if all the world's adults agreed to stop buying gifts for each other, and focused all the gift giving on those who still believe in Santa.

Fuck commercialmas. You're supposed to treat each other with love and kindness all the time not justa couple weeks at the end of the year.

I think our society has gotten to the point that we need a reason to be kind and generous to each other. This holiday fulfills that for many people, whether religion is their basis for it or not. Just go with it, because it's not like it's going away anytime soon. You'll experience Christmas every year for the rest of your life whether you want to take part in it or not, so might as well not let it bother you.

We are really poor this year, so we are making fudge and granola for gifts. I got nice jars for the granola, and cool boxes for the fudge. I got my parents a little something else but, all of the relative are getting fudge and granola!

I would appreciate a gift of fudge (so long as I was not expected to pack it myself).

i feel kinda guilty too, my family buys me stuff, and im effectively broke so its hard to reciprocate.
also, my coworkers are all about buying something for every person in the office. i work there 3 days a week and only see 5 of our 12 person staff. i feel obligated to get something for these people, but i dont want to spend a 3rd of my paycheck buying everyone some weak 5$ gift.

major problem is that my kitchen is still under renovation. ive been without a stove/ oven/ kitchen sink/ dishwasher since the beginning of november. i definitely thought about making food because i cant justify spending too much money on 7 people I really dont even interact with. maybe ill make some no bake type treats or make goodie bags or something. i just dont like the feeling of obligation because everyone is just kinda going through the motions getting gift cards for everyone. i cant do that.

Okay, I also knew a lady who was in a sitchy-ation like yours, and she walked around and asked everyone if they've been naughty or nice. Naughty got black socks nice got white.
She was the hit of the office that year. You can always use a pair of socks, they're relatively cheap and if you have any left over, now you have some new socks, too. |
