Well I knew this was going to happen sooner or later. We got him an Ipod touch for Christmas and now he wants to download his own music. The only thing that bothers me is all the porn links on shady torrent sites. He's 12 and he's probably watching porn on his own already but I try not to think about it and I certainly don't want to encourage / facilitate it in anyway. How do I approach this?

tl;dr 12 year old son wants to torrent, I'm concerned about all the porn what to do?

Another option I'm considering I guess I'm leaning towards buying him an Itunes card and letting him buy his own music.

It's not a matter of yes or no, he wants me to show him how.

I most definitely think I will buy him iTunes credits or an iTunes card and have him download music legally. And I'll teach him about how pirating is equivalent to stealing. If he figures out how to torrent on his own then so be it, but all he's getting from me is instructions on the proper legal way to go about it.

iTunes seems pricey though, is there a cheaper alternative? (Perhaps something you pay once a month and he gets unlimited downloads?)

this is what i was gonna say. take the jab to the wallet and teach him the correct way to do it. it will only take a couple days for him to figure out torrents, but there is no avoiding that.

You give a kid born in the 90's too little credit.

Parents should never use technology to punish. The kids are way better at using said technology.

I got the internet the first day it was available my town in like 1997. It didn't take me long to find the porn and I was 2 years younger than the subject of this conversation.

14 years later and I'm still teaching my parents how to use computers.

Most torrent sites have safe search provisions, but his pc/phone should have that option also.
I'd teach him about porn too. (or at least how to avoid it on the net)..

And teach him about "fakes" and virus/trojan infected uploads, maybe how to detect them and how to eliminate them.
