It's facetious and disrespectful.

I think borrowing is generally okay, as long as someone goes into it knowing that claiming something for their own doesn't erase centuries of historical, spiritual and political relevance and meaning to the original culture. For example...if I wanted to borrow the swastika symbol insisting on the original spiritual meaning of the symbol, I could not expect others not to be offended because of its more current antisemitic connotations. Symbols have cultural and historical meaning attached to them.

That's an interesting story.

I appreciate the woman's honest sharing of how her first reaction is an experience of fear. And the following quotes as well:

"Symbols have meaning, and the meaning of this symbol — in the Western world certainly — is one that is the absolute opposite of peace, and to see it flying in Vancouver it is difficult to see and it represents something that's very hateful to me.

"I think many people would want to not knock on the door, because they would be nervous about who they might encounter inside," she said, adding that she would welcome a cross-cultural conversation about what the symbol means to different people."
"The dark thought, the shame, the malice.
meet them at the door laughing and invite them in."
-Jelaluddin Rumi

"Not self-wrought is this puppet form,
Nor other-wrought this mass of woe;
Condition-based it comes to be
Condition-ceased it endeth, lo."
-Sister Sela
