Of course, but by this line of logic any money not being used to keep ones self alive is taking food out of someone's mouth.

What if the yoga memberships included a $1 charge for Indian Orphans?

/facepalm

They don't have to change their name or add money to the problem, all they should/could do is acknowledge the actual history of which their programs derived from.

Most indians would probably be happy with that.

Sigh, why is this such a hard concept for white guys to understand, to not have an us vs. them mentality?
you are coming off as straight up racist in this thread bro

i dont really care, and i dont really take any offense at what you are saying at all, but i am getting a strong ass prejudiced vibe from your posts

so fucking what if white people want to do yoga without treating it as a spiritual discipline? is this seriously that offensive to you?

you realize this is what us american/white do, right? we take other cultures traditions and practices and put our own spin on it. if you want to get angry with this, step right in line, cuz theres tons of people ahead of you who have already put in a ticket such as blues musicians against elvis and mexican dudes against taco bell. even our religion comes from a bunch of brown people in the middle east.

also this is not an industry-wide thing. you say that like the entire industry made the same mistake that the person in the OP did. the great majority of people are aware of what they are doing and getting into. to take this one anecdotal account as evidence as to what the entire industry is like is just dumb.

TLDR Komp chill on the hating whites thing jesus

I just dont get why you seem so personally invested into this issue?

Like, are you that defined by your skin color and culture?

Who really gives a shit about this?

I could never imagine myself getting so emotionally invested in an issue that affects me personally so little.

Because it's a clear example of American institutionalized racism by ignorance/whitewashing, and the white dudes don't give a shit.

It's a microcosm, but sigh, hard to get people to understand.

Again, I don't really care as much as you think, I live with it everyday. My own office has yoga classes in the building. This whole thread is about cultural appropriation, and your answer is who gives a shit.

There are people who give a shit...

The line IS fine, yes and respect is best.

Cultural mosaic vs Melting pot.
Mixing and mingling > Bastardising.

Come on, it's not hard to at least grasp what Kompressor is saying.
Know the roots of a practice and honour it.

Realising the first sentence is thankfulness. This is the birth of REAL awareness.

Second, anyone knows a charity with that overhead is shit.

This whole thing smells of the "trade a bead for all this land" thing where one person will see value in something and then only when the other party realizes that there is value in it do they want anything to do with it...

White people yoga has evolved into this so called "white filth" however, no one can claim the adaptation as their own. They have to live with the fact that the thing was co-opted and turned into a cash cow.

Taking things and making money off of them is what white people do, not for reasons of oppression, disrespect, etc...The end goal is to always create a demand and reap the rewards, or if the demand is already there, tweak it a little bit and make more money than the last guy was...

Shit sucks but all of us crying over it seem jelly of those that made the boat..

clearly american whites are the racists here

the whole having to know the entire history of something before participating is a middles chool level of elitism.

im fine with elitism, but its a silly thing to get bent out of shape over

The problem with that analogy is assuming Indians see value and want something to do with it. The only thing that bugs most indians [and for the billionth time that's only when asked about it] is how far from its namesake it is. Has anyone seen someone actually trying to stop it? If anything this yoga is growing, but the totality of indian culture is arguably more far-reaching globally than it is in the US. It's just sad that we have to basically whitewash it for people to get into it here.

As veda was saying, looking good in lululemons means you're feeding sweatshop clothing industries, etc. etc. under a false sense of self.

Basically the last thing Yoga really wants you to do.

Sometimes you have to cut the hot sauce with a bit of sugar before people's palates will accept it...

That's the crux of a lot of problems that people have with America. We have a pretty shallow culture. Anything co-opted by us is going to be co-opted in a shallow form. We like the aspects of yoga, for example, that slim our asses more than the aspects that have real depth. It's the American way.

It's just an observation. Again, microcosm.

There's all sorts in the top list.

Agree

FWIW: In the long history of assimilation of the Buddhadharma in various countries and cultures, 'Western/American Buddhism' has done a decent job of maintaining their awareness that they are something unique while at the same time acknowledging the singular and various roots of their lineage. To me this is commendable.

Lest we forget this discussion expands into many spheres of cultures and religion.

This man is a HIGHLY controversial character within Indian for his appropriation of language , so say to draw converts to Christinity. Father Bede Griffiths
