Climate Change and Extinction.

I've become more interested in Climate Change and the science behind it lately, and I've been reading The Sixth Extinction: An Unnatural History by Elizabeth Kolbert . It makes a fascinating and troubling argument that, basically, humans ARE an extinction event, an unprecedented one in geological history. It's not hard to see, as the extinction rates have increased right along with human population growth. That alone is pretty striking.

I'm currently on a section dealing with ocean acidification, which, along with global warming, constitute the effects of increasing CO2 in the atmosphere. Ocean acidity can only increase so far before the balance of life in the sea is drastically affected.

It's very interesting, and leaves me with an overall feeling that all our day to day shit is pretty petty, and that all our fights are taking place in a burning house. I'm not optimistic that humanity will "turn it all around". Certainly increasing sales in solar panels and Toyota Prius's will not fix things. We need to find a way to fix the damage done, and take a big step back from our centuries of re-structuring the biosphere to meet our needs, at the expense of the biosphere itself.

Thoughts?

It's interesting to think about how often in life, we float along, make judgements and moral decisions without really being tested when you live a life thats affluent enough to be consistently comfortable.

And when you face real hardship, real threat and dramatic change, not only is your character tested, but you are given the chance to make conscious decisions regarding what sort of values you represent, and what your virtues truly will be.

And its easier to consider such ideas in a more personal context. But in our complicated societies with huge divisions of labor, and facing a threat like climate change that requires a societal solution, it is our higher faculties, our ability to organize ourselves and for the majority of individuals to adopt a certain mindset, a mindset that is too abstract from actual personal experience to warrant physiological response that life or death situations do, that will determine whether or not we can rise to this challenge before it gets out of hand.

If you know what I mean.

Just finished it. The part about the Neanderthals was really interesting. Apparently there were many advanced hominids running around and each one's extinction coincided with the appearance of humans in their environment. However, with Neanderthals, we interbred with them before we killed them, making every human on the planet (save people of African descent) 1-4% Neanderthal.

Yes, you heard that right: black people are only racially pure Homo sapiens. The rest of us are genetically adulterated.

does the book mention any other biologically driven mass extinctions? only one i know of (though i'm a far throw from a fucking scientist) is when algae or something started photosynthesizing and basically gas chambered the whole world. if might be hubris, but what humanity has achieved seems as great a leap as photosynthesis. would love to hear more background. have other biological paradigm shifts happened without causing extinction?

I wouldn't say im optimistic, and i definitely think things will get worse before they get better...

But honestly im quite confident we will be able to reverse the negative impact we've had on the planet.
Without a doubt i think we will be able to reduce greenhouse gasses in our atmosphere, neutralize ocean ph, and replenish fresh water reserves on land; which are basically three of the major aspects of climate change which are leading to the mass extinctions you mention.

I also think that, even if we lose crazy amounts of species, i think we will be able to repopulate with either clones or genetically engineered similar species designed to thrive etc etc.

I think climate change has the potential to seriously make things super shitty and cause mass suffering, but i dont think it will end us.

To be honest the only two things that i think could actually end humanity at this point is either a bigass surprise astroid coming by within the relatively near future
OR
Robots / AI taking over.

They talk about the end-Permian Extinction maybe being caused, in part, by sulfur emitting algae. You should read it. It's a page turner.

I'm glad to know people actually do this

It's definitely one of the best ways to get through a heady/dry read.

I know a guy who runs his own wood shop.
Between family and work, "I have no time to read."
So he got on the audio-book wagon, while working....
Says, he's read.... is that the right word ....
more books in a couples years than he's read in his whole life."

I find it super interesting that for most of the history of our evolutionary tree, multiple species of homo co-existing was the norm, not the exception.

Thats some serious lord of the rings, elves/dwarves/orcs/humans type shit. But of course stone-age style. Blows me away.

There is another people, the denisovans, that were around the same time as the neanderthals and modern humans, and I believe asiatic peoples carry some of their genes as well.

Interbreeding with these people gave us the immune system catch ups we needed to quickly move into the lands that they had spent many generations evolving adaptations to.

I remember:

Traveling through train

Going to Piedras Negras spirngs and Linares Mexico,

Killing a pig for dinner.

No roads.

Like traveling back in time at 8 years old.

A real ranch.

They barely lived off the earth.

Non Processed meats or anything.

Well water as well.

Pretty soon we all have to visit the ranch

I've forced myself to fall so in love with the flood that I think I'll buy a diesel and do that gay thing that makes the exhaust extra shitty.

I seriously look forward to kayaking through my flooded out home town later on in my life.

The jersey shore's barrier island is gonna be one of the first populated areas rendered uninhabitable(or not worth it due to too frequent serious flooding). Like it could seriously hit that point in like 10 years or so. It is already pretty bad.

That's what they get tho for over-developing tye hell out of a freaking barrier island.

My house, which is say like a mile or so from the coast and closer to the bay, could be water front property in a couple decades lol.

But freal i cant wait to kayak around the ruins. It is gonna be sweet.
