They're gonna be allowed to spot check drivers....with red eyes, dry mouths...wtf knows now?
Police are getting fancy equipment to bust more impaired drivers than ever before.

The point of legalizing now is to give the govt and cops more power.

They're doing med mj in florida now. But get this, they want to install govt filters on all computers and phones sold in fl and they're hiding it in an anti-human trafficking bill.

They're going to give us all legal weed. They're just going to take all our other rights instead.

the problem is going surround the enforcement of impaired driving because you can't necessarily prove someone is impaired on marijuana. there are a lot of factors and it stays in your system for a long time (especially chronic smokers). this isn't necessarily a limit of technology but simply how your body processes thc. there is really no advancements to testing that can solve this problem and its going to be a gong show with 10 different approaches.

Hey PG!
I think the current answer is: We don't truly know yet. So far, they're saying the medical MJ standards will continue as they currently exist. The govt tabled more serious legalization discussions, but instead chose to focus on impaired driving. But yeah, like CC said, it will be up to the provinces.

Here is some information the gov't decided on legalization in April:

"-Sales to be restricted to people age 18 and older, although provinces would have the jurisdiction to increase their own minimum age.
-Adults 18 and older would be allowed to publicly possess up to 30 grams of dried cannabis, or its equivalent in non-dried form.
-Sales by mail or courier through a federally licensed producer would be allowed in provinces that lack a regulated retail system.
-Adults aged 18 and older would be allowed to grow up to four cannabis plants for each residence, with plants not to exceed one metre in height.
-Adults aged 18 and older would also be allowed to produce legal cannabis products, such as food or drinks, for personal use at home.
-At first, sales will entail only fresh and dried cannabis, cannabis oils and seeds and plants for cultivation. Sales of edibles will come later, once regulations for production and sale can be developed.
-Possession, production and distribution outside the legal system would remain illegal, as would imports or exports without a federal permit. Such permits will cover only limited purposes, such as medical or scientific cannabis and industrial hemp.
-Travellers entering Canada would still be subject to inspections for prohibited goods, including cannabis.
-The existing program for access to medical marijuana would continue as it currently exists.
"

Here is something from CTV regarding impaired driving:

"Another objective that became clear Thursday: impose significantly more rigid laws to combat impaired driving in all its forms, be it alcohol or drugs.

Driving under the influence is a major contributor to deadly road crashes in Canada, Justice Minister Jody Wilson-Raybould said, calling young impaired people the single largest group of drivers killed in motor vehicle accidents in Canada.

The legislation, once passed, would allow police to use what she called "oral fluid screening devices" to check for marijuana impairment, while also creating brand new driving offences for those caught driving while impaired by pot.

Police would be able to demand a saliva sample if they have "reasonable suspicion" a driver has drugs in their body; a positive test result would then help officers identify "reasonable grounds" to demand a blood sample or further drug evaluation."

Some good info in this article.Liberals table bills to legalize pot, clamp down on impaired driving - Politics - CBC News.

In Toronto it's such a mess. In the last couple years dispensaries popped up in so many places in the city. People were given cards very easily, and as a result there were massive police crackdowns. They shut down nearly every dispensary in the city, criminalizing the owners just a year before legalization.

It's proven itself to be incredibly divisive, in which police are operating on the fear mongering and NIMBYism of residents. Police have shown that they aren't interested in the consumer whatsoever, but capitalizing on the fact that it's still technically illegal here.

All of this has put a super negative relationship between police enforcement and users.

This is really insightful coverage on the whole matter. CBC's Carol Off talks to the Justice Minister, pointing out the irony: Canada will legalize pot, after arresting a bunch of people for pot offences first: Neil Macdonald - CBC News | Opinion

I remember they were giving saliva test in Australia a few years ago. They would do a road block, and their saliva test would tell if you had used in the last 3 hours.

using in the last 3 hours doesnt mean you are impaired though. if you are a heavy smoker you will always fail this test without necessarily ever being impaired behind the wheel

also its mad expensive because positive results have to be sent to the lab to confirm, not that anyone cares about that

there is a possibility that some methods to defeat this test include eating some special gum right before the test

It's a huge money sink, especially when it's tax dollars paying for it.

Yet these self righteous assholes still wont give up their insane crusade.

ultimately testing every single driver every time they get into their car would cost less than the war on drugs

i am so cynical i could almost call it progress

oh and not being a criminal under very specific circumstances is a general improvement (but not solution) to the problems we face

But if you hadn't used in the last 3 hours, you'd pass right? Why would heavy smokers fail if they hadn't used in the last 3 hours? I have used in the last 3 minutes so maybe I'm missing something here.
