Question Buddhism

I'm wanting to study Buddhism a little. Can someone give me the titles of some books that give me an introduction to the faith. Also, do the Buddhists have a 'bible' or something similar? I might just start there.

A good place to start is "The Tibetan Book of Living and Dying". By Sogyal Rinpoche, I believe. It's sizeable, but a good read. It's broken into different sections so you can read it in any order you like or find interesting. It's the kind of book you'd keep on hand and refer to, just as some would a bible.

I believe it's an explanation of the Tibetan Book of the Dead with many references to the teachings of the great buddhist lamas.

I don't know how much help I'll be here. I have read three books which discuss philosophies of Buddhism, but they really don't discuss Buddhism head-on like I suspect you're looking for. I am sure there are better books out there to really get into the bread & butter of Buddhism.

Anyways, here are the books I have read on the subject. The first two are fun and easy reading books I read about 10 years ago. The last one is a rather recent read. They were all good books, but like I said, I doubt they're what you're looking for.

"The Tao of Pooh - Banjamin Hoff
"The Te of Piglet" - Benjamin Hoff
"A Lifetime of Wisdom: Essential Writings by and About the Dalai Lama" - by Bstan-Dzin-Rgya-Mtsho

Also, there are usually both editorial and customer reviews on Amazon. They have a lot of books on the subject.

buddism is not a faith my friend. nor does it have bibles.

i could explain buddism from my personal point of view, but it would be of limited use to you because you are not me!

the more you read about buddism, the more confused you may become. words are just words. buddism is buddism. buddism is not words! this is important to remember.

buddism trys to teach you things for yourself. it gives you the key to the door but you have to open it. buddism is mainly priciples and ways of thinking that you develop over time. but like i said, my words are just words! buddism is a journey, an exploration into your own mind.

have fun.

ps. email me at logik@xtra.co.nz if you want some links or info or anything.

Thanks folks. Should be some good Christmas reading.

Iogik, thanks for the insight. But I wrote 'bible' like that because I couldn't think of a better word.

I agree! What a brilliant book - inspired me to spend time researching Buddhist philosophy.

Another good book is "The World Of Zen" (not sure of the author)

If you want sizeable Buddhist e-books, I suggest Budd haNet

"Better than a thousand pointless words is one saying to the point on hearing which one finds peace." - Buddha

Buddhism does have "scripture" of what Buddha actually said. This is similar to the concept of a Bible since it prescribes various Buddhist doctrines to the different schools of Buddhism.

alan watts has written some very clear books on the religion aswell as philosophy in general. some of those other books are very detailed and only for those who have a basic concept already.
