The Bible Code was made famous by Michael Drosnin’s book (of the same name), but the discovery of the apparent code predated him by two or more decades. As such, it is reputed to be a code embedded primarily in the first five books of the Bible (the Jewish Torah) -- but theoretically elsewhere in the Bible as well. Allegedly, the Bible Code is able to predict all manner of events, ranging from the Nazi holocaust to Hiroshima to the assassination of presidents and prime ministers, and several near-term future events.

Claimed predictions include the assassinations of Yitzhak Rabin, Anwar Sadat, John and Robert Kennedy, along with the names of killers, dates, and other rough details. In the case of John Kennedy, for example, words and phrases associated with his name included: “Dallas”, “Oswald”, “name of the assassin who will assassinate”, “marksman”, “sniper”, “he will strike in the head, death”, “Ruby”, and “he will kill the assassin”.

References are also made to the Great Depression, Hiroshima (1945, “atomic holocaust”), the Moon landing (“Apollo 11”, the date, Armstrong’s statement), Watergate and Nixon, Comet Shoemaker-Levy hitting Jupiter (Genesis and Isaiah), the Persian Gulf War (“Hussein”, “Scuds”, “Russian missile”), and Bill Clinton being elected President.

The Code also allegedly described portions of the Holocaust (“In Germany”, “Hitler”, “Eichmann”, “Auschwitz”) and WWII (“Roosevelt”, “He gave the order to strike on the day of the great defeat”, “Pearl Harbor”, “destruction of the fortress”, “the fleet”, “Churchill”, “Stalin”, and “Hitler”. In fact, the phrase, “Hiroshima to end shooting whole world” was found at the point in Genesis which the plain text states: “And it repented the Lord that he had made man upon the Earth and it grieved him at his heart.”).

Still other examples include Homer and Greek Poets, America (“Revolution”, “1776”), Napoleon (“France”, “Waterloo”, “Elba”), Shakespeare (“Hamlet”, “Macbeth”), Beethoven and Johann Bach (“German composer”), Mozart (“composer”, “music”), Rembrandt (“Dutch”, “painter”), Picasso and “the artist”, Wright Brothers and “airplane”, Edison (“electricity”, “lightbulb”), Newton and Einstein, “Marconi” and “radio”. With the word “Einstein” is “They prophesied a brainy person”, “science”, “a new and excellent understanding”, “He overturned present reality”, “theory of relativity”, and “Add a fifth part”. The latter suggests the need to add a 5th dimension to the theory in order to have the so-called Grand Unified Theory. [Or perhaps as in The Fifth Element!]

The Code has, according to http://www.diagnosis2012.co.uk/1.htm, been verified by both mathematicians and code-breakers to be quite real. Furthermore, the last encoded date (thus far established) is the seventh month of 2126 A.D., when comet Swift-Tuttle is expected to return to the vicinity of earth. In the interim, however, is the prediction of another comet due in 2012 A.D., which is expected to crumble into pieces or “annihilate” the Earth. Assuming the 2126 dates has any relevance at all, one must assume that the 2012 rendezvous will be confined to a mere crumbling into pieces!

It should be pointed out that not everyone agrees, however, with Drosnin. In fact, in the sequel to his book, the events of 9-11-2001 are allegedly prophesized. Key words and phrases included, “twin”, “towers”, “airplane”, “it knocked down”, “crime of Bin Laden”. There was also a reference to a nuclear war in 2006 [see below].

The faintly dismal picture painted by the sequel book apparently did not go over too well with certain “pious skeptics” [as reported by Netscape, 2/20/2003]. The skeptics allegedly used Drosnin’s code on the book, War and Peace. They not only found the exact words (bin Laden!??), but they supposedly also found encoded in Drosnin’s new book, “The Bible Code is a silly, dumb, fake, false, evil, nasty, dismal, fraud, and snake-oil hoax.” The latter, of course, while faintly humorous is clearly fanciful. The fact the “pious skeptics” claimed that Drosnin’s work demeaned “God and His word by treating Him as a secretive magician. Besides, such code-busting violates the Bible’s own ban on soothsaying, notes AP.” [But of course, the stuff about War and Peace and Drosnin’s book would also violate the same thing -- not to mention: honesty, truth, bearing false witness, etceteras.]

This skeptical approach does, of course, highlight the inevitable resistance to concepts that some people of a “pious” or “old guard” scientific persuasion tend to exhibit all too clearly in the light of day. Many individuals and groups seem outraged by the very idea that the future is in part known, and that anything supporting a knowledge of such things is simply wrong. The true reality is that there’s nothing really new under the sun, Determinism and Free Will can, in fact, coexist in the same reality, and for anyone to claim something is impossible is simply a lack of their ability to see it. Seeing is not only believing , but believing is also often necessary to seeing.

Meanwhile, other interesting examples include:

The “Holocaust of Israel” is linked with the years 1996 (AM 5756) and 2000 (AM 5760). “The next war” was encoded with “It will be after the death of the Prime Minister.” There is no way to know whether the code predicted a war in 2000 or 2006. The year 2000 is encoded twice (with “World War” and “atomic holocaust”), but 2006 is mathematically the best match. The 170 words of the “Mezuzah” (required of the 304,805 words of the original five books of the Torah to be kept in a separate scroll and posted at the entrance of every home) are encoded the years AM 5760 (2000) and AM 5766 (2006), as well as “world war” and “atomic holocaust” -- the only time the latter is encoded.

In the book of Daniel, “The End of Days” is associated with the 1290 days of “the abomination that maketh desolate set up”, and the 1350 days for those blessed who will survive. “The ancient commentary states that there will be a terrible time before the coming of the Messiah.”

In the portion of the Bible which describes Moses receiving the Ten Commandments, where it says, “Behold, I make a covenant; before all thy people I will work miracles,” the code says “computer”. The word “computer” appears six times in the plain text of the Bible, hidden within the Hebrew word for “thought”. Four of the six anachronistic appearances of “computer” are in the verses of Exodus that describe the building of the Ark of the Covenant. In Exodus 32:16 (“And the tablets were the work of God, and the writing was the writing of God, engraved on the tablets.”), encoded in the same verse is a hidden message: “it was made by computer.” [This might relate to the Tables of Destiny so highly prized by the Sumerians, and which Abraham was reputed to have once held.]

The Pharaoh named Joseph, “Zaphenath-Paneah” equates to “decoder of the code”.

“Communism” is encoded once in the Bible Code, associated with “the fall of”, “Russia”, and just below, “China” intertwined with “next”. But with such a fall comes complications -- as in a U. S. Senate report which stated: “Never before has an empire disintegrated while in possession of 30,000 nuclear weapons, 40,000 tons of chemical weapons, tons of fissile materials, and tens of thousands of scientists and technicians who know how to make these weapons, but do not know how to make a living.” A Russian official who investigated the theft of enriched uranium from a nuclear submarine base in Murmansk put it more simply, “Even potatoes are better guarded.”

In every vision of the Apocalypse, the final blow is a massive earthquake. According to Drosnin, “The code seems to warn that over the next hundred years there will be a series of “great earthquakes” around the world. Two future years are clearly encoded with “the great terror”: 2014, and 2113. The latter year is the best match.” “The bible code seems to predict that the big earthquake will hit Los Angeles in 2010.” China is likely to suffer a major earthquake in 2000, and possibly again in 2006. Japan has the same dates (after a string of successful predictions), and appears with Israel with the two Biblical statements of the “End of Days”; even “final battle”. “Economic collapse” is encoded once in the code, along with 1929 and “earthquake struck Japan.”

References to the year 2000 as disaster years are obviously flawed. But inasmuch as the year 2006 is also mentioned in the same context, we may not be quite out of the woods.

The Code suggests that the extinction of the dinosaurs was the real slaying of the dragon, the cosmic event recalled by Isaiah: “Was it not you who cut Rahab in pieces, and pierced through the dragon?” Astronomer Brian Marsden calculated that the comet Swift-Tuttle -- by experiencing a change of +15 days -- could collide with the Earth and do to it, what the previous asteroid did to the dinosaurs. “Swift-Tuttle” is encoded in the Bible with “5753” (“Eve of the New Year”, 1992), and the year 2126. The latter also notes it came in the 7th month (which means it would miss the earth -- as opposed to two weeks later in August, when it would collide with the Earth). But Calendars being what they are, the assumption of the seventh month being July is not necessarily a good one. Thus, the year 2126 might yet be the final swan song of the Earth. So don’t make any firm plans for any time after that!

Separately, the year 2006 is encoded with “Its path struck their dwelling”, “starlike object”, and “Year predicted for the world.” 2010 is encoded with “days of horror”, “darkness”, “gloom”, “comet”. 2012 includes “comet”, “earth annihilated”, and “It will be crumbled, driven out, I will tear it to pieces, 5772.” But the pieces may still reign down on the Earth (as in Shoemaker-Levy on Jupiter).

The fact that there is uncertainty in the 2012 A.D. prediction is of interest. It is possible, for example, that modern science may be able to deal with an incoming comet/asteroid by breaking it into pieces (as was dramatized in recent movies). There’s also the possibility that they will not be successful at such an attempt. Stay tuned for the sequel!!!

Physicist Paul Davies has theorized that an “alien artifact” could have been “programmed to manifest itself only when civilization on Earth crossed a certain threshold of advancement.” This idea fairly well describes the Bible Code, a time-lock which could only be opened once computers had been invented -- and which would have prevented Isaac Newton’s attempt to decode the Bible from being successful hundreds of years ago.

The Bible Code may in fact have been designed to be found now. In 1997 (the Hebrew year, AM 5757) is encoded with the words, “He sealed the book until the time of the End.” Right above are the encoded words, “for you, the hidden secrets”, and crossing the words is “for you, it was encoded.”

Finally, one might recall the phrase from the Book of Isaiah, “To see the future you must look backwards.” In other words, look to the most ancient works to determine the future. This could include the Bible, the Upshanidids, the Mayan Calendar, and so forth. As has been noted on the home page of this website, Mark Twain is reputed to have once said, “The ancients have stolen all our really good, new ideas.”

Meanwhile, perhaps, very significantly, “5756” (1996) also means “Will you change it?” The idea of serious prophecies being contingent upon the free will of individual/collective choice is an enormously profound piece of the puzzle.

Yup, but there is no special theoretical evidence that the Mayans had actually created their calendar. It appears that it was handed down from an earlier civilization.

There are even debates in India where scholars are contending that the end of the Hindu Kali Yuga, the Age of Ignorance where Shiva destroys the world and Vishnu rebuilds in an Enlightened Age, are closer to 2012 than 3102 which was previously thought.
