Yoga Sutras, your opinion?

I think the Yoga Sutras, written by Patanjali, have been the most important Scripture or spiritual doctrine I've ever read.

For those of you who aren't familiar with it, it is the oldest known text written about yoga ever. The first writing to ever explain Yoga.

Yoga, according to the Sutras, the "suppression of the modifications of the mind". It is what Christianity calls Christ, Buddhism calls Nirvana, Hinduism calls Enlightenment. It has been referred to as the Tao and even God.

In the bible , it says "Be still, and know that I am God". That pretty much sums up Yoga.

A link to the Sutras can be found in my sig.

Thumbs up

I have seen that writing since I"ve exploring Hindu ideas and find the concept layed forth extremly connective to All. I am correct that the writing you talked about has been and was developed by an person , at some point,in the history of Indiaolgy? Hinduism has been the trinity in my personal spiritual life...Fist came buddhism with its Ideals, then the paegan way led to my idea of god/dess, All, the spirit of life, and hinduism put what I was thinking into words.

Now I don't know if I would say say I was anyone of those singularly but I think that each one of those Ideas have a broadness that leaks/spreads into or allows for the others.

You're post really interested me.

For me, It was Christianity (the teachings of christ, his selflessness, healing, loving, etc) , Buddhism ( with meditation, dharma, karma, etc) Hinduism (same principles, but very different than buddhism in certain ways)

Yoga was my final destination. Not final as if there is actually somewhere to "get to", but rather I rest in the Science, Scriptures, and Study of Yoga.

45. The Vedas deal with the three Gunas. O Arjuna, be thou free from these three Gunas; free from the pairs of opposites (cold and heat, pleasure and pain); ever steadfast, be thou free from (thoughts of) acquiring or keeping and self-possessed.
46. To the Brahmana, the knower of Truth, all the Vedas are of as little use as a small water-tank is during the time of a flood, when water is everywhere.
47. To work alone thou hast the right, but never to the fruits thereof. Be thou neither actuated by the fruits of action, nor be thou attached to inaction.
48. O Dhananjaya, abandoning attachment and regarding success and failure alike, be steadfast in Yoga and perform thy duties. Evenmindedness is called Yoga.
49. O Dhananjaya, work (with desire for results) is far inferior to work with understanding. Therefore seek refuge in the Yoga of understanding. Wretched indeed are those who work for results.
50. Being possessed with this understanding, one frees one's self even in this life from good and evil. Therefore engage thyself in this Yoga. Skillfulness in action is called Yoga.
51. The wise, possessed with knowledge, abandoning the fruits of their actions, become freed from the fetters of birth and reach that state which is beyond all evil.
52. When thine intellect will cross beyond the mire of delusion, then alone shalt thou attain to indifference regarding things heard and yet to be heard.
53. When thine intellect, tossed by the various conflicting opinions of the Scriptures, will become firmly established in the Self, then thou shalt attain Yoga (Self-realization or union with God).

I used to live in Waterloo. I've only heard about that place. The town I heard was pretty interesting a " little India" in the middle of Iowa. I thought it sounded pretty cool , but others made it seem like the town was invaded and destoryed which sounded typical mid-west.
