Because beliefs are what define the concepts we bring into our lives. Beliefs decide wether you go to war or stay at home, wether you go to church or sacrifice virgins, wether you win the game or lose the game, etc etc. In this way beliefs do no directly equal reality, but do contribute a WHOLE lot to the experiences you have. This is why i look at them as more of a filter.

I definitly agree with you. "reality" is just a word i use to describe the sum of all your "life experiences." this definition is bound to change in a few years time as we discover more and more about "reality" and how it stretches way beyond any of our "life experiences". thats when we can really start replacing the old faulty beliefs with new better ones. (relatively speaking of course)
