When I smoke from a piece, I get less high (unless I take a bunch of hits), but I can control the size of each hit better so I dont really cough. But when I smoke from my bong (w/ 2 cubes of ice), I'll go into a coughing frenzy and feel throatburn if I fill the entire chamber and clear it. Is the ice supposed to prevent that? What can I do about this? The after-effect on my throat is starting to affect the enjoyment of my highs

try using hot water in your bong instead. the steam will provide a humidified hit that's much less harsh.

you could also just try taking smaller hits. there's no law that says you have to fill your bong up all the way with smoke before you rip it. you should try taking small hits and holding them in for as long as you can (you'll use less weed this way too).

i think you'll find that filling it up will get easier with time, though. a bowl that used to take me 3 or 4 rips to clear i'll take all at once nowadays (and get higher as a result). also, try adding an ashcatcher to your bong. it will add another filter to it that makes the hit twice as smooth.

thanks for the replies, guys. i'll try hot water tonight. my bong has a diffuser. as for the weed, its been decent stuff - bubba kush, sour diesel, sweet tooth, etc. i can try smaller hits, but i just dont get as high. when i cough a lot, those are the best hits, but it sucks to cough that much and worry about my throat

def gonna have to give the warm water a try. I seem to get mega heartburn whenever I get a bag, which is usually weeks apart. Ive never been able to pinpoint it to whether its from the bong, which is all I smoke from, or the fact that once I get a bag I endulge on the munchies hardcore for the first few days and eat lots of shitty(healthwise) food. The bottom of my bong shall be warm next time I purchase.

I notice you call it an ashcatcher, I assume you're talking about the mesh in the cone.
The perfect bong has a wooden cone/piece/köpf and there is a fine iron screen on the bottom of it. It's the bong screen and it is a very important part of a bong.
Such screens can be found in hardware stores or can be simply removed from household water taps.
They need to be cleaned after a few rips, but they can last quite a while and are worth its weight in gold.

i know the screen from the faucets youre talking about. do they function better than regular smoking/pipe screens? or they just last longer than regular smoking screens?

ashcatchers and screens are different. the screen keeps the ash from going through, but an ashcatcher adds another filter. it's really nice for those of us who smoke multiple times a day.

here's a couple examples:





the 2nd pic is the same kind that I have. there are also a lot of two-piece ashcatchers (the first one is a two-piece that is missing the bowl. roor makes a lot of two-piece ashcatchers but they're kinda irritating to work with). the ashcatcher is kinda like a mini bong that you put water into and place into the diffuser. they make any bong twice as nice.

Sometimes my throat burns really bad after I've been smoking for more than like 2 bowls straight.

I've learned that I enjoy bowls most by when smoking by myself and taking rips like two rips at first, then every 2-5 minutes.
