How the fuck can there be an "oldest rock on Earth"?

The whole damn place is made out of rocks, and the whole damn place is really old.

Scientist have shown interest in Pavillion Lake where those clay concretions have been found. They say there are similarities between life here on earth as well as on mars....

As a result, there is international interest in the lake and therefore it would seem prudent that Canada have a hand in her exploration. The microbialites that grow along the walls of the lake are not the only feature of interest. There is a collection of interconnected mounds on a submerged ridge in the centre of the lake that should be investigated with regard to origin. There is an opportunity here to investigate the attributes of this unique lake and to make a contribution to establishing the possibility of life on Mars. Our previous research reveals the unique opportunities the Pavilion Lake ecosystem presents in elucidating microbialite morphogenesis and microbial calcification processes, and in improving our ability to interpret the fabrics of ancient carbonates.

i would assume "oldest" means "longest time spent in it's present form/composition."

the youngest rocks are those constantly being created by the flow of magma from ocean ridges and volcanoes.

Wow Im surprised. Previously the oldest rock was about 3.8 billion years old from greenland. I am sure I will hear about this in my geology class on tuesday.
THe age of the rock depends on the type there are 4 main types.
Sedimentary rocks age depends on when it was lithified. (compacted and compressed) Metamorphic depends on when it was re-crystalized and igneous rock age is determined by when it solidified.

Volcanoes for Dummies.

It's the oldest rock found because most of the land masses 4.6 billion years ago have been melted miles below the earth's surface.

The kind of rock is definitely one way to guess how old a rock is, but different types of rocks are formed in different environments.

The methods that they used to date the rock have a 300million year margin of error, because the radioactive dating methods are not completely accurate but if more tests are preformed and different radioactive isotopes are used to date the rock and the other tests will help to more accurately determine the age. I'm studying to be a geobiology major at the university of washington.

I have the oldest crack rock, it was cooked up about 47 days ago and hasn't been smoked. Scientists are stunned, crackheads are plotting.

So how do they age these rocks? By dating the carbon, in the life forms pressed into the rock when it was formed? So it would make sense that they have to "search" for old rocks. Am I on the right track?

The whole damn place is made out of rocks, and the whole damn place is really old.
Based on the formation and reformation of rock. The "rock cycle": Igneous rock is a partial melt which can freeze upon reaching air or water. This can turn metamorphic if it there is pressure+heat. Crystals can grow and regrow and basically recycle and reform. The oldest rocks are ones that have been stable and relatively unchanged in 4 B years.

I hope I'm ready for my Geology test on Weds hehe.
