I personally always thought 5 roaches made a generation joint, and then 5 generation joints made a second generation joint, which is what he's describing.
I've only ever made 3rd gen. level, and it burned just fine. The times when I was smoking enough herb to accomplish the other generations I was still in high school and using everything to the last drop, no crumbs under the table, no roached not ripped up as we'd usually run out by the end of an evening/weekend.

I can't stand those, they're more difficult to roll (I usually roll on a diagonal instead of holding the paper completely horizontal, gives it more cone-shaped dimensions. The wire gets in my way and is usually too hot to hold if you take one down to the face. Plus then the ashtray is full of long wires poking out everywhere, not for me.
Always use a crutch for jays, as mentioned it gives the implement structural integrity. I used to pinch roaches all the time and throw them in a glass jar and when the neighborhood went dry we'd take them all and pitch em into one giant sticky resin-y joint. These days I usually prop the crutch between two prongs on a fork a-la Big Lebowski and use that as a makeshift roach-clip. Handle on the fork makes the job of passing a cinch, and you don't have to worry quite as much about burning your hand off when you go to light a little nub to get the last few tokes. Not to mention, classy classy.

Rip a 1x1 in piece of cardboard from a pack of cigarettes (the inside lip usually has a nice rectangular piece perfect for such endeavors), matchbook, cardstock, etc, and roll it between your fingers to make a tube. Don't make it too tight or else you won't be able to smoke through it. Put it in the end of whatever you're rolling with (I find it's easier to keep the crutch on the side my dominant hand is working on, but figure out what's best for you) and use it to shape the paper/wrap around. Like I said, I find crutches imperative, for all the reasons previously mentioned and more.

It's a british thing, netherlands too.
not the same thing as a "filter" in the US. It's really meant to just keep bits of weed out of your mouth, and makes the roach so you can burn the last bit of cannabis in a joint more easilly, with less risk of burning your lips.

I used to roll with a roach but now if I have skins I invert the paper around the bacci and its good to go. Not so great for passing around a group though. Most of the times I empty a cig and pack it if I don't have any green dragon.

Cypress Hill's Phuncky Feel Tips — Cypress Hill's Phuncky Feel Tips
These things are pretty bad-ass. Total novelty item, but also work great. You can smoke a j down to nothing and with no sogginess. I picked em up as a total impulse at the local shop for like $15.

I've been smoking a lot of joints recently, as well as rolling my own cigarettes.
I think I'm going to try using roaches for a while to see how I like it.

I like to roll my joints with a Crutch, what the OP called a roach, helps pack it down a little bit
we used a little different terminology, an internal crutch is one that's rolled into the joint, whereas a normal crutch is just wrapped outside a regularly rolled joint. sometimes i will use a regular(external) crutch to cover as much as half the joint, and push it through as its smoked, but when i roll for my self its always an internal crutch. and then i throw the roach in the ashtray for a rainy day

When i smoked J I did occasionally use a roach I like it better, but i find it harder to roll with the little piece of paper in there. those Cypress Hill tips look pretty cool, but you have to roll your J around the tip... that looks kind of tricky.

when i actually had weed or the rare occasions of hash, I loved to roll with a great big filter into a cone-Think I got the link from don, or nun, one of the european hookans-several years ago. As has been stated, you can smoke a regular sized joint with a small sized nug.
Cone joints are deceptively easy to roll. |

I use a peice of cardboard/or notebook cover and roll that up around end of joint. I don't put it inside the paper
also
