I got pulled over yesterday for my plates being in the windows by the University cops. I didn't get a ticket cause it is an old 79 Datsun I picked up in Oregon and the old plates are rusted to the car. A work in progress. My other car is a 2003 Frontier. I hardly drive the Datsun, we use it for canoeing.

The rookie that pulled me over was doing something and the Sgt pulled me off to the side. He told me he has seen my lil pipe in the Datsun (spaced that one out) the last few weeks parked and he threatened my job, my education and told me how unacceptable it was. Then they let me go.

I do have my card and I have serious health issues. I think my rights were violated.

If you're driving without your front plates, in a state that requires them, you were in the wrong. Driving stoned is stil a DUI, even if you're prescribed it, afaik.

Your rights weren't violated at all. In fact it sounds like you're being a baby about this.

There's no reason to have a pipe in your car, or to put your plates in the windows.

On top of that, the cops let you GO. And you're still complaining about your rights being violated?

#1 I have a medical marijuana card and legally can own a pipe that is used
#2 It is harassment of some sort because he has been watching me for whatever reason
#3 The state I am originally from you can put plates in your windows, front and back... I didn't get a ticket and this was not my bitch

And if you have any empathy at all you can clearly see my concern because I am sick and I clearly do not want to lose my job or education over his threats.

Well I wouldn't stress and from now on make sure your plates are on right and your pipe is away. I think that'd be akin to leaving an open container laying around anyways. Permit or not.

Medical status should be a freedom we all have, but right now I think it's still in the privilege stage of the game.

There's a pretty good chance that not everybody has a medical card and there's no way for the cops to know unless you show it to them. You're on a college campus and everyone there smokes pot. The cops are going to be looking to bust anyone they can, because they know they're on a college campus and everyone smokes pot.

It doesn't matter if it's legal to have your tags in the window. The police are going to be looking for anything out of order. You said the old plates are "rusted on"...I can't imagine the rest of the car is in good shape either.

The best way to avoid getting hassled by the cops is to make sure they don't have any excuse to pull you over. That means not leaving your pipe in plain sight and attaching your tags properly.

It's good to hear you didn't get cited. I've been hassled by the cops, so has everyone else who's been pulled over. If you don't grow up and stop bitching about having your "rights violated", it's only going to get worse.

So, you have a beater Datsun that you usually only drive when you go kayaking. Otherwise it sits. Sometime in the past, a University Cop sees it sitting stagnant, and decides to get out and walk around the car, checking for a flat tire, expired plates, any sign of abandonment. Through YOUR carelessness, the cop notices a pipe in plain view inside the vehicle. The next time he sees the car, you're driving it and your plates aren't correctly displayed, so now he has probable cause to stop you. Then he remembers the pipe and brings that up too, and he gives his opinion of you based on a snapshot of events and information.

Where were your rights violated, and what specific right was violated?

You got 'harassed' because it was a school cop and he had nothing better to do but bust your balls, most of the time they are private dicks or loosely affiliated with the local P.D. such as a state school but still mostly rent a cops.

You pay for these guys to have their cushy little jobs and you guys should never let them forget it. You pay tuition to the school that pays them, they work for you, if they would like to threaten fucking up your life over a joint ask if they would like to be working security at McDonalds in Watts next week after you speak to the financial officers or whoever you pay your money to. Grab a few friends to help you complain, see who wins, the guy they pay or the one who pays them.




Or you could just run the fucker down next time he gets in front of your shitty Datsun.

1) Anyone over 18 is allowed to own a pipe. Marijuana is still illegal for %98 of American's to smoke, so the police have every right to be suspicious of people who have contraband. If a BATF agent saw a man at a gun range firing a fully automatic weapon, don't you think they would ask to see his class 3 license? It isn't harrassment.

2) It is the police's job to make sure people aren't commiting crimes. When it appears you are commiting a crime, the police will watch you.

3) Are you still in the state that allows you to put plates in your windows? If not, you are in the wrong. I have gotten a ticket for having a plate in my window too.

You are lucky you didn't get a ticket, and the police were completely in the right. I hope you didn't make a scene, because that makes us smokers who actually like it when the cops do their job a bad name.
