How often do you clean your piece?
I have a small collection of art glass that I have bought over the years, most from shops along Venice Beach. I own no huge gaudy bongs, just a small collection of bubblers, sidecars, and hammers. There’s no cheap Chinese-made brittle glass, but locally crafted Pyrex stuff. It's all very tasteful, my favorite motifs being geckos, tree frogs, and bugs.
Although I’ve smoked pot now for over 30 years, I don’t smoke very often, so when I do it’s special. I have a procedure, every detail of which has been honed to the level of a Japanese tea ceremony. The last step in my smoking ritual, before I put away my weed and pipe, is to clean my piece with alcohol before returning it to its case. This summer, whilst traveling around Central and Northern Cali, I was the recipient of much stoner hospitality, and so partook of weed from different pipes. While I got the chance to smoke much fine cannabis and hash, every time the pipe was filthy. When an excuse was given for the condition of the pipe, it was usually that it was color-changing glass, and was not supposed to be cleaned. I still don’t get it. Would these same people not wash their glasses and dishes between meals if they were made of color-changing glass? I know I'm anal about my glass, but I was just wondering, how often do YOU wash YOUR pieces?

I have a really nice Hammer that was made for me from a friend and unless it is clogged or resin starts dripping out i never clean it. i only smke the finest of bud from my glass, none of that cheap shit ever gets near it. but if you like to clean yours after ever use then clean it.

I agree with Old Man.
In my smoking days I would keep my pieces very clean, usually at least wiping them down between sessions. I view it exactly like the dishes metaphor. Granted sometimes I will leave a plate out to use it again if I'm eating pizza or something similar, but for the most part I clean it after I'm done with it. This is also why I never liked smoking in groups or at another dealers house, the amount of people that put their mouths on a piece could be astounding. |

personally the minimum amount of pipe cleaning is once per bag of weed that i buy. if i buy a big bag of weed i clean a couple times. i would say on average about every 8th smoked. compared to my friends i am cleaning my pipes 1000% more than anyone.

I keep my bong clean because even though its supposed to change colors, I like how it looks sparkling clean better. I have a one hitter that I run a pipe cleaner through every couple of days, and a Chameleon pipe that I clean intermittently. It looks cool when it starts to color out, but after a bit it begins to taste bad and I hit it with the old Salt n Alcohol.

Back when I smoked before I got a vaporizer which I use exclusively now, if it was a glass bong or an acrylic bong I would clean that more often than I cleaned glass, wood, and metal bowls. I never let water sit out overnight and I may have made the water dirty from a session but I poured it out.
For most glass pieces I'd keep those pretty clean except if it was this small piece that I mainly smoked out of and didn't share much. I only cleaned that when I was done with a bag and it had lots of residue in it since it was a Sherlock and bent and not a straight pipe. I would clean one hitters very often since they got dirty very fast and clogged up.

I usually clean my bong once a week and swap between it and my vape. All my friends always go on about how clean and nice my bong is compared to others they have used and their own. Some say bullshit like old water gets you higher.

Bong water gets gets switched every 2-3 days, lemon juice to keep it fresh.
The mouth part i wipe down with a lysol wipe every now and then to keep it clean, but i only clean the whole thing when it starts to look grungy (could be a week, could be three, depending on how much i use it). Pipes just get cleaned if their getting clogged or something, then its a full alcohol bath and back to square one. I dont prescribe to the dish washing analogy because theirs a few key differences. First of all i'm always smoking weed out of my pipes (usually), whereas on plates shit would get all mixed and matched. Also dry resin on a pipe doesn't rot. nothing eats it, no bacteria is gonna grow on it. glass is pretty sterile and unless people are slobbering on them for some reason theres not really anything to make you sick. if you leave out dirty dishes it actually gets nasty, not just foody.

Bong, squeaky clean.
Pipes get it once a month, unless I get some super headies and I want a totally fresh taste.

What do you use to clean? I am not liking the taste of my bubbler. When I draw air with nothing in it get nasty taste.
I boiled a piece once and cracked it. Im thinking place it in coldwater and THEN boil it. And do an after wash of rubbing alcohol with a final cold water rinse to get it all out. Im sure this has all been spelled out time and again but not having luck with search function. PS dig your guys style dirty pipes are major turn off. I was using papers for a long time to avoid the taste.

get a good solvent (isopropyl alcohol (90% or higher is better, but 70% works), acetone, dichloromethane) and let it sit for a while, then rinse out the gunk with hot water.
it will look brand new

I don't like my pieces to be too clean, or else they tend to snack, as the herbs i smoke burn down to very fine white ash. A small amount of what pipe smokers refer to as cake prevents the eating/inhalation of too much ash. I smoke almost exclusively out of either a small glass "pocket-pal" chillum, or a dugout. The dugout gets pipe cleaned about once a week, and the glass chillum's cake scraped down to about half a mm, as necessary. The inner tube I remove resin from as it accumulates.
My hammers and gold/silver worked pieces i admit are almost pristine. For the daily drivers, it just seems unnecessary. Which you very clearly state is not an issue in your case. :shrugs: to each their own. |
