Shake vs. Nugs?
What do you guys think?
I know that big, fat hero nugs are definitely a pleasure to get. I'm always excited to take one out of the bag and hold it up for a close-up viewing and sniffing. There's nothing quite like the beauty of monster nug. Historically, getting nugs (buds) instead of shake has always been preferred. Shake has a bad reputation and is usually avoided because it seems like it's just what's left over at the bottom of the bag. But here's my question-or please allow me to play devil's advocate for a moment. -Doesn't the shake at the bottom contain (catch) most of the kief/trichomes/crystals? -Assuming the weight is correct, isn't shake a better deal because you're not paying for any stem weight? -Honestly, isn't the whole thing psychosomatic? I have read other threads and forums in which this becomes a heated Us vs. Them discussion with the majority falling into the "Buds are better than shake!" Any thoughts? |

The shake might be the best bit- assuming your source is totally honest.
Otherwise it could be any old crap. Buds will tend to keep better if whole though.

have you ever weighed a stem? it weighs virtually nothing, theyre often hollow.
its worth it to say that there are different grades of shake. bag shake is probably just fine, its just crumbs of nug left at the bottom of a bag. some dispensaries offer shake that is basically cuttings, like leaves and shit, i guess people use it to make edibles. i have smoked that shit and i will never buy or smoke shake again, it is basically like smoking the leaves off the tree in front of your house. if you get a good price and its not the 2nd kind of shake, id say go for it. no leaves please

Yes, that is exactly what I'm talking about. Let's say (hypothetically) that I recently purchased a pound of my favorite top shelf strain. Let's say that I sold/shared much of this purchase to my close friends. Let's say after all that handling of nugs, there was a considerable amount of loose shake (perhaps 1/2 oz) left over at the bottom. This is the stuff that I'm referring to, not just some leaves, stems or loose cuttings. But when I try to sell/share this stuff, people turn away in disgust. Really? I know it ends up being "more for me" and honestly, I REALLY enjoy smoking this stuff, but I can't sell/share it to save my life. Isn't this kind of shake similar to what a kief catcher does?

youll have to drop the price, or let them sample it first. i know if i have money to spend im not going to want to drop it on shake if nugs can be found somewhere.
if its not leaves, then its just a psychological thing imo.

I think part of my problem is that I was selling/sharing from the top of my bag downward. I would start by dispensing the larger nugs at the top of the bag. By the time I exhausted my supply, the handling of the buds 'shook' down a significant amount of 'shake.' The bottom of my bag would typically end up surrendering about a 1/4-1/2 oz of pure shake.
btw...this stuff is fabulous! The problem came when i would try to sell/share it. The last two buddies coming for 1/8ths each got stuck with the shakey (but always weight accurate) final offerings. I'm sure you all can picture the looks on their faces when they saw their purchases. Several have even passed and waited for the next batch. Then I got some great advice (that I see now many of you have already known ) --It was suggested that I evenly spread out the shake along with the nugs as I go. Brilliant. Why didn't I think of that? I'm an idiot, that's why.Anyway... Every now and then, I still end up selling/sharing an 1/8th that has slightly more than usual shake mixed in with the buds. I still get the sad looks and the cursing-under-the-breath reactions from some of my picky weed-snob buddies. They only want hero nugs. I Understand. We've all been there. The point is...I have grown to appreciate that kind of shake. Loading a fat bowl of that stuff is thoroughly enjoyable and always cures what ails me. The additional bonus is no grinding, ready to pack/roll. So...on behalf of bag-shake smokers all over the world, keep the dream alive. -Uncle

you answered your own question, mang! But now that you've gone and sold your nugs, you might as well accept a discounted price on the shake, if moneys are the motivating factor here. But now you know what to do in the future! Can't put a price on that.
I know this is totally off topic, but it's funny, with the blends, the inverse of weed is almost always true-the larger fragments of plant material at the top of the container are all pretty consistent, but as time goes on and you get down to the more powdered material, potency increases dramatically...I'm guessing the synthetic cannabinoids aren't as touchy to decomposition through crushing/pressing/bruising/oxidation whatever as true cannabis is(with the resultant sometimes less potent shake), and simply owing to more material in less area, you get more drug per hit.... ...I dunno, kinda stoned...digress... |

As far as my screen name "Uncle" goes...it's both. A real life nickname (for years) and a screen name I use on other various forums. Thanks again to all who have offered me such a warm welcome to YaHooka. I'd be honored to stick around and participate. I have already learned very much through these forums, mostly honest accurate information that helps dispel many of my old inaccurate stoner urban myths.

I think it depends on the shake. Sometimes there's more small pieces of crushed leaf in the shake sometimes it's all bud, depends on how well manicured it was. Either way I got go with nugs over shake if not for look than anything else.

If you grow your own, take your biggest bud after harvest and put it in a jar. Take what you need to smoke from that big bud until the stem and the shake is the only thing left in the jar. Now tell me you don't wish that big bud was still intact instead of what's left at the bottom of that jar. Of course this doesn't mean that shake can't be ass kicking but I think the bud is more potent when intact.

I hate shake. I only smoke it cause I'm addicted. Half of it is stems, you know that? Not the big stems or the "trunks" of the trees. No, it's chocked full of the little "branch" stems. You can feel them if you smush the shake between your finger tips, it's all hard and pokey. That stuff ruins the smoke.
