Purpose of an ash catcher?

Why not just use a bong without it? What is the purpose behind one?

keeps ash out of the chamber, keeping it much cleaner. and you don't have to change the water as often.

to expand on what deadhead said.. it basically keeps the main chamber of the bong cleaner. this can be important for bongs with multiple percolaters or what have you. complex glass is harder to clean so an ash catcher can be really important. they also make for a smoother hit. i used to use one when i had a 3 chamber bong, it was admitedly kind of a pain in the ass because the bowl on it was really small, but it did a good job of keeping the piece clean

it also helps to distribute the heat, and helps to insure you are burning more herb and not just sucking un used bud all through your works.
