I calmly explained to her when she was 3 that the brown sodas have something in them that makes your heart beat too fast and isn't good for your heart. I told her it was caffeine. Try to give her a caffeine drink today ?(she's 6 ) and you WILL LAUGH. She look at you offended like you offered her poison. If you continue to look blank she'll calmly explain what I told her at 3 years old about caffeine. Now when she goes to friends houses I always find out at the pick up if they offered her a coke. Cause shhe offered them a sermon.

Kids can rationalize quite well!

. I also don't do the caffeine thing with them (like they need it! ) and I explain why. But, my daughter has no problem taking it when she is away from me and for a while (until I caught her) she was taking her money (that she's allowed to spend on anything that she wants EXCEPT things that she's not allowed to have) and buying it from the vending machines at school.... 'til one day she walked in the house with a Mountain Dew (she rides the bus and usually it's gone by then) and I said, "What are you DOING with that?" she said quite proudly, "I bought it with my own money." lol... so we had to have a little talk... I don't think she does that anymore... of course by the time they're a little older, they can have it if they buy it or it is given to them.... then I see it as their own choice.

Well, "spanking" or hitting your child is illegal in Britiain, and to be honest, my opinion (although I am not a parent) is that violence breeds violence and that hitting a children is the worst thing you can do as a parent. My dad used to smack me as a kid (every now and then) and to this day I resent him for it, so if I did the same thing to my son or daughter, I would be effectively hitting myself (confusing, huh).

What is "spanking" exactly? All I can picture in my head is a boy over somones knee getting slapped on the ass. I mean, is there a particular measuement of the force created in a "spanking"?

^In my house, a spanking consists of 1-3 slaps on the butt (over the clothes and not hard enough to leave a mark but hard enough to wound the pride). It comes (unless there is an extreme circumstance) after the count to three warning and followed by a time out (which is one minute for every year old the child is.... or sometimes a longer 'nap' time-out if it seems to be an day that bad behavior is repeated time and again).

Well, I don't know about the other parents, but in my house it would be a lucky coincidence to able to get her neatly laying across my knee and gently waiting for the spanking.

The reality usually works like this: I chase her. I catch an arm and I hang on for dear life, all while praying I don't loose my footing either. With one arm holding her arm as she continues to run I try to get a whack in with the other arm. 8 out of 10, I'll miss. I'll try until I think I got three good ones in.

I let her go thinking I've really done something just in time to see her smirk, laugh and take off again.

That's how a spanking goes in my house. Hope that clears things up.

No don't paintball your kids.. thats fucked up. My dad and I used to paintball in our woods but he always gave me the crappy pump one and he had automatic and kept shooting me even tho i said give up and and put barrel plug in but he kept shootin i dunno why

Hi Bondi. It's amazing how those views can change isn't it?

Lots of things sound good 'in theory' but practice and theory are two different things. Do you mean that he wakes up at night and screams or screams because he doesn't want to go to sleep or what (just curious... ya might be able to find some advice that may or may not help)? If it were me, and it was just a fit... if he has his own room, i'd just close his door and let him throw the fit (of course I know there are lots of variables). The best of kids can be the worst of brats when the moon is just right

. Why do you feel that it's better for you to discipline them than your wife (or did I misunderstand that)?

I find it sad that so many people on here support the use of violence against children as a form of punishment. Violence breeds violence, fear breeds fear. If you shout at a child they know they've done something wrong, why do you need to inflict physical harm? If they don't listen to you when you shout and only listen when you smack then you are ruling by fear. Not fear of punishment but fear of physical attack. It makes me sick quite frankly.
Violence is the lowest form of human expression. When you have absolutely no other option of how to get your feelings out or point across people resort to violence.

And to the people who say, "My parents smacked me, it didn't do me any harm." Well obviously it did as it's taught you that it's OK to hit children wich in my opinion it most definitely isn't under any circumstances.

Year before last, my 17 year old at the time wanted to see if he could take me down... experience over mind set any day...
