buying a laptop online

hey y'all.
im hoping to use your wisdom and pc skillz.

im getting a laptop. i want to spend exactly 650$ (after taxes and everything and shipping too if I get it online).

so being on a small gulf island i don't have any future shops, circuit city's,radio shacks or anything like that and i have to wait till the next time we go to town to check out an electronic store.

so what i was thinking is just ordering it online seeing how i can have much more variety and i can check everywhere out.

im only getting a laptop because the pc that we have now is super outdated old and running slow (like 256kram). and to get it reformatted it'll be 150$ and getting more ram is another 150 or more depending what i wanna get so it's easily over 300 and seeing how ive been in the market for a laptop for a long time i figured nows the time.

i only need it for going online, and maybe getting/storing music. no games.

i dont want to go the dell route but it seems the most economical way to go.

anyways i was hoping for any input help or advice as to what to get what i need what to look out for and where to get it.

please and thank you

You get what you pay for. I would save more money for a good machine instead of one that will be useless in 2 years.

Dell over HP. If you ever have an issue with an HP it's a pain in the ass to get to. Had to clean out my fan...talk about shootmeplease. You have to take the entire goddamn thing apart just to get to simple shit. They're also known to have shit screens and major HD issues after a few years on a lot of the models. Anything you look into buying google that model and reviews or major issues.
HPs in my experience heat up way easier than Dell's. idk man, I'm votin no HP

Then you're not getting the right Dell. HP sucks.

i've had a dell going on 4 years now and i've never had a prob upgrading. got my wife a dell laptop for mother's day and it's been gravy. paid about 450 bucks. . . 17.5in screen, 3 gigs of ram, vista home premium, dual core intel, etc etc. you won't do wrong with a dell

which is moot because you won't be able to upgrade your laptop anyways, no matter where you get it.

You can upgrade Alienware laptops... (which incidentally are now owned by Dell)

surely your joking?

to the op- if you are looking for a basic pc just to go on the internet with and store some files check this website

TigerDirect.com - Computers, Computer Parts, Computer Components, Netbooks & Electronics

and you can find what you need for probably a hundred bucks or more less than you think. get a nice big HDD like 500GB-1TB so you can store as much music as you want and you would be set. i just got a laptop for music recording for 450 bucks that is better than my 2 year old dekstop computer.

My sistr settled for a Dell twice due to the fact they are cheap. She got the no fault insurance. I can't tell you how many times both have had issues and what a painfull process it was to convince the Indian dudes who were reading from a script that the issue was hardware related as opposed to use. Dell sucks big time.
