The UK’s Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has discovered that Square Enix – the developers of popular sci-fi video game Final Fantasy XIII – had misled gamers by not using pictures from the Xbox 360 but from its arch-rival, the Sony PlayStation 3.

All it took was an eagle-eyed gamer who noticed that the advert was using higher resolution images from the PlayStation 3 for the ASA to act. The Advertising Standards Authority tested the game on both the Xbox 360 and PS3 using an identical set-up and agreed that the screen quality on the PS3 was ‘sharper’ than images from the Xbox and have banned the ad from being shown again.

In the ASA adjudication, it was stated: “A viewer objected that the ad was misleading because the game footage in the ad was from the PS3 version of the game, which was of better quality to that of the Xbox 360.”

The complaint was upheld after the ASA made the following ruling: “We tested the two games, on screens with an identical set-up, and ran them alongside one another. We noted that there was a discernible difference in the picture quality of the two; the PS3 image in video sequences appeared sharper and colours were more vivid than those of the Xbox 360.”

In their defence, Square Enix said that “… the ad did not feature game play footage of images derived from a particular console, but rather contained full motion video (FMV) cut scenes”. They have however admitted that the images used were from the Sony PlayStation “to allow advertisers to capture the FMV footage for the advert”.

Experts have warned that the ruling which declares that PS3 games have a higher quality than Xbox titles could have a major impact on the multi-million pound gaming industry.

Xbox melts down too. My first one, red ringed 2 weeks after I got it. Good thing the return was still valid. I just got a new replacement, no problems since.

True, but it's an easy fix.
You can't fix a melted power core + whatever else melted along with it.
And did they even recall em? I know they fixed the problem but did they refund money or refurbish the console?

Oh and I had my 360 for 2 years till it red ringed..
Come to think of it, the majority of the first 360's red ringed, so maybe the two companies are equal in suck.

I don't understand what there is to flame war about. All the article shows is that Final fantasy 13 looks better on ps3 than 360, not that ps3 has better graphics than 360 overall.

ps; I've had my 80gb Ps3 for 2 years and it's still going.... please keep going..

obviously they both fixed their problems.

And usually this is a heated debate since most console gaming fans are devoted to a single company, Microsoft or Sony and there's a lot of tension between the two, seeing as Microsoft > Sony for many reasons...

And I think you are ignorant. My PS3 plays Blue-ray movies, streams movies on my laptop to my tv wirelessly, can access my photo album from my computer to my tv, can go on the web, etc, etc, etc. There are other reasons other than just gaming you see.

Meltdowns you say? My PS3 is almost always on (slim) and so far I've yet to have an issue. See, my son will start playing a game and pause it cause he is not at a point where he can save it to the HD. So I usually leave it on as I don't want him to bum out by me shutting it down and him then losing all he's gained and have to start again.
