Studio Headphones, Help!

im trying to get some better headphones for producing. id like to get monitors, but i wont be able to use them much so im opting to get some studio phones. im just starting my search, i was wondering if anyone here has any experience in this area.

a quick search and im looking at these 3:
Denon
sennheiser
audio technica

anyone ever tried any of these? im looking to make electronic music and to do some recording for guitar and possibly later with vocals.

thanks for any input

specs are important but the most important thing is how they fit your head. just try a bunch on and see what you like best, then search the internet for the best deal on them.

if youre using these for production, mastering, levelling, monitoring etc. the most important thing is not how they fit your head. do not listen to this man^
the most important thing is sound quality. with that said, go ask experts. go into any sound store in your area and start asking people.

also, if you are using these for monitoring, good luck producing music that sounds good. its really hard without monitors man, seriously.

imo, i think you are both right. capt. is def. right in that if you're gonna be mixing/monitoring tracks for hours on headphones, you def. want a pair that will be comfortable, and wont cause ear fatigue so quickly. and your def. right about sound quality.

other than that, i would also add that if you plan on doing any live instrument recording or vocals, i would stay away from open or semi-open headphones, because this can cause a nasty bleed-through onto the track being recorded (since open backs can leak a lot of sound). also, get circumaural (surrounds the ear) headphones, not supra-aural (sits ontop of the ear) headphones. more comfortable during longer sessions, less bleed, plus a more defined and punchier bass end generally.

ya im aware of that, using head phones is not ideal. i dont feel like im going to get any use out of monitors because no one else in my house can tolerate sound. as it is now, im using headphones to produce, so i figure i can just upgrade those and wait til im out of this house to go for monitors.

unfortuneately i dont trust sales people to tell me straight if something is a good product, so im trying to get a feel for whats what before i start testing.

what are some things to listen for when trying out headphones?

Ideally you want to try them out with some high quality recordings that you you know well. Listen especially to bass and treble.
They should be comfortable on your head and ears, your ears should not get too warm.
Closed back is essential if you ever use mikes or dj, doesn't matter too much if you're only using synths and/or samples. Open backed phones are often more comfortable.
It doesn't matter that much how natural they sound- you want to hear detail from the phones- you should monitor your tunes on your hi fi and car stereo as well.

Like the Captain said you definitely want to try before you buy.

If you're looking to spend about $150 you might have to compromise a little somewhere- this shit gets expensive if you want the best.
A good deep even bass extension is probably the most important thing if you want to make bleepy tunes.

senns and audio techs are both regarded as super quality cans in the audiophile world

check out an audiophile forums like audioholics.com or something

dt 770's
i tried out the audio technicas and the denons at guitar center yesterday, they were both really nice audio quality, but these beyerdtnamic dt770s were the best, imo, and the price was pretty good, 189$. the link is to a different model, with 250 ohms impedance, the one i tried out has 80ohms which i think will be better because im going to be running them out of my computer not through a professional sound rack.

those are nice!

actually i had a talk about this with my uncle whos in the industry. he said when it comes to headphones you already arent in the best environment to be creating music, so the ones you get for 80 bucks are going to be just as good as the ones you get for 200. headphones just arent ideal for making music, you cant tell the levels or the eq or anything and when you go to listen to it on something else it sounds wwaaaaaay different. i know you do it cuz you live at home and i find myself in the same situation many times late at night and it just sucks. luckily i have some nice monitors that i can bust out during the day and pump up up.

The higher quality headphones are more due to listening quality that sound-creating quality, is basically the deal.

Amazon.com: Sony MDR7506 Professional Large Diaphragm Headphone: Electronics

those are the industry 'standard'

the ones you picked are dope as shit and will do the job as good as any pair of headphones can.

im listening to the beyers as i type this and they are extremely clear! i can hear all the different bass tones, and the hi's are nice n crisp.

i was kinda of expecting it to be similar to my other headphones, but these bad boys are nice. im working on mastering a track, ill probably have it done alot quicker than usual

its nice being able to have a sub bass and a midd range bass, and to actually be able to hear each one without it turning into low end mud. im impressed at this point

more reviews to come, they have to break in a little bit im guessing
